Hi chaps!

Whilst home for the weekend I'm driving my parents to a party (yes I've reached that stage in post teenage life...) And wonder why their 2001 4.0 THOR p38 is SO SLOW... Speculatively unplugged the MAF sensor after getting home and voilà back to full power, so hopefully that's all that's wrong.

2 questions :)

Is it OK to leave this unplugged until a new one is fitted? Even if yes I may tell my dad it isn't just to encourage him to get on and order one!

On island 4x4 there is an OEM Bosch and 2 cheaper lesser ones (Britpart and Bearmach) - I think I'm right in saying this is a component where one wants the proper one but just wanted to check.

Certainly go for a genuine item, having seen what a cheap maf does, in my experience on a friends it was worse than the failing genuine item! If they wont go for the proper item then good used second hand genuine is the way forward. Depending on whats happened to it it might also make it even worse on fuel so they may well save. As for leaving it unplugged, assuming its for a short period I wouldn't have thought it would cause any long term damage apart from being a bit worse on fuel than if a good working unit was fitted.
 
A P38 v8 poor on fuel, must avoid such a thing :p

Thanks, that's what I thought was the case, I should be able to convince them :)

I presume that with it unplugged the engine management just defaults to some standard settings based on atmospheric pressure, so would assume it'd be OK unless the computer throws a fit at some point!
 
Driving with a disconnected MAF worked gloriously for all of 3 miles before the computer through a hissy fit and gave power-no power-power in very quick succession...

Refitted the sensor and it's slightly better than it was but not perfect by any means.. So hopefully a replacement will sort that!

Go for the Bosch. The Bearmach sold by Island is a cheap chinese copy as i found out.
 
also try cleaning it with electrical cleaning spray NOT wd40 or anything else iv had success in the past doing this and clean mine every service, make sure its dry before refitting i use an air line and give it a blast.

not saying it will work but its a cheaper 1st option
 
Ah didn't catch your advice in time Dave! But I got this text from my dad today: "Fitted the new [Bosch] MAF Sensor. Car is now so responsive it's fantastic". So that's good :)
