Hi All

I'm looking for a decent (who's not!) Defender 90 SWB, preferably with a diesel lump.
Idealy I only wanted to spend a couple of "k" but it seems the choice is pretty poor.

I can go to maybe 4k providing the landy is worth it. For that sort of money The once's I've seen have been C reg- L reg, with some real dogs along the way.!

Does anyone know of any for sale, that are not too far from Donny/Sheffield area, up to 100miles!

Feel free to email or call 079 800 15856 (wilse)

Thanks all.

Hi there

The early 90's had better bodies than later defenders but the TDi engine is better, so you want an early landy with a late engine. Don't touch TD5 engines, often cheaper to buy than TDi lumps unless you are mainly on road.

Go for an ex MoD 90 and laugh all the way to the bank!

They may have small low powered 2.5 n/a engines but there almost bomb proof are very reliable and spares are cheap and plentyful too.

Try "PA Blanchards" near Market Weighton, "Witham" near Grantham or
"L Jackson" near Doncaster.

Not that you'll get a TD5 for your money, but I wondered why Spectric doesn't like TD5's. I've had three Landys (Discos and a 90) with them fitted and think they're the bees knees. I sold my 90 TD5 (with Disco final drive gearing and chip) to a guy with a tuned TDi and he thought the TD5 far superior.. Different characteristics to the TDi, admittedly.
Which just shows that people favour the type they have..

Saw a 1985 90 with TDi engine in one of them yesterday. There's much scrap available as you've found. No point in buying cheap then spending a fortune on repairs or a rebuild. The steel bits - chassis, bulkhead etc will rot. and chances are an 80's model will be unsound if not looked after. (I know, I've just spent over a year rebuilding a 1988 County V8).
I would think that £4k is a minimum these days for anything reasonable, but price doesn't tell the whole story. Many dealers will skin you for a rotting heap. It all depends what you want to do with it, toy or everyday transport..? If it's for use in a club and you will do minimum mileage, then maybe a V8 if you can find one, if for everyday use, a 200 or 300 TDi. A bit heavy offroad but reliable and not slugs like the NA model. Prices are too steep, IMHO. I suspect you've not owned one before.. I would consider very hard why you want one, you really need a good reason to suffer the discomforts compared to a car. Most of us have a reason, even if it's just to annoy the wife..

Hello,

Can any one tell me what extras a 93/94 SWB 90 County (No other extras) had over the standard model and what engine would it have a 200 Tdi or 300Tdi.

What electrical items are prone to failure.

Thanks Gary

Hello,
A countys extras over a standard landrover are Cloth seats, carpets rather than rubber mats, Internal trim rater than bare metal, a clock and folding side steps. As for engines the main bulk of 90's from 1991/1993 94 have the 200 tdi after that the 300 both excerlent engines. The only main electrical problems i have had are the lights (not headlights) they let in water and corrode for fun but are very cheap and easy to replace!
