Hi Jymted here new member owner of 05 plate td4 hse was looking for recommendations for 4/5 inch round long range spot lights sorry if did not do this right

I don't get the " oooo it's sooooo dark in the country I need big lights" brigade. Drive for the conditions and within your limitations and the lights that come with your vehicle will, (oddly enough), do the job.
I live in a very rural area and have never felt the urge to add extra lights , just to drive on the 'main' roads or tracks.

I wondered about that too. If his eyesight isn't good enough to drive at night without spotlights, he surely shouldn't be driving.

To be fair I find driving on the main roads at night difficult nowadays. On quiet roads in the dark its fine but I find I am dazzled at night quite badly when there is lots of oncoming traffic in a non streetlit area. Having brighter lights wouldn't help with this though

The problem is people constantly wanting brighter lights, because they are driving outwith the reach of the lights they have ( too fast). In tutn oncoming drivers are blinded by upgraded bulbs .
Adding lights , as you so rightly said does not help the issue.
