As far as I had read on the tfl website, all vehicles taxed as historic are exempt from the new London Ultra Low Emission Zone. There is nothing I have found to say that classic diesels are not exempt.

My Series 3 diesel would fall into this category as it was built in late 1972. Its tax class was changed to historic before I bought it.

When I type the reg plate into the compliance checker, it says it is subject to the charge. Has anyone else had problems with this?

It is not such an issue at the moment as I never drive into the city centre. However in a few years time this zone will be brought out as far as where I live.

Thanks for any replies.

I've been following this issue very closely as I live just outside the M25 and may other car (petrol) is early 90's and so it looks like it will get clobbered. The LEZ website has a vehicle check box so you can put your reg in. My Series is "historic" and comes up as exempt. I think there are a couple of things to watch, 1 the number of other cities bringing in LEZs, the problem for me is that they are places I do drive - Reading, Bristol, Bath and its not clear they will all follow the London LEZ exemption and 2) It think this could lead to engine checks if too many historics start drving in the LEZ, not an issue now but I'm keen not to do anythign that cuold jeapordise historic status.just in case.

Classics are exempt as they're a minority..

You'll be fine.

Gov has just found another way to justifiably rob us, don't worry though London is prolly the most congested shyte hole in UK..

Would help if they didn't put traffic lights every 20 feet.

I have already done this and it tells me I am subject to the charge. It gives on option to contact TFL if you believe your vehicle is exempt.

Perhaps they are trying to scam people by not having it written that you need to take the time to register your historic vehicle.

My understadnig is that they imported the full tax class data set from the DVLA when they set up the LEZ but they don't update continously. I think the assumption was vehicles don't change, which is true for most but not vehicles around 45 years old which is why they ask you to contact them to have your vehicle amended. Mine (1970) came up ok and as the 1972 one did too I suspect if we work back 1972 plus 45 = 2017 so that may be the last update.

pre '73 was where the old system stopped wasn't it (anything over 25 years or whatever it was) that was culled off in the 90's? when they started rolling forward again they took up where the old system left off.

so anything '72 should have been historic for a long time and should have been in their original data.

This doesn't solve the problem of actually driving in the LEZ. I'm about 25 miles as the crow flies to the climate change protests in London, tomorrow is a bank holiday so no congestion charge but still the LEZ so I could drive into London for the day. But being LEZ exempt is not the same as being welcome with my 50 year old 3 ltr Perkins. Most everywhere we go we are welcome, but this one makes me a bit nervous.

be funny if someone organised a historic smokey diesels day out for the same place as the protest :D

I wouldn't drive in London on a bank holiday though, I am sure the place will be gridlocked

That's a great idea, but even if the protesters leave a run should be organised for as many diesel vehicles as possible through the center. Get it some of the old tractor boys to come a long as well, they make a land rover look clean and healthy!
