Lift Pump

I have just ordered a new lift pump for my 19J engine. The kit comes with a spacer that fits between the pump and the block. The manual says that if you have one fit it and if you haven't then dont. I have not got one fitted, but how do I know if I should have?

Check the length of the arm that runs on cam shaft agaisnt your old one.
Some engines have a flat mounting point others have an stepped alloy mounting point so no spacer required,
