I am not usually indecisive

I have had 4 x100w rubber spotlights from ebay on the front of my roof rack. They have been on 5 years and are corroding impressively!

They are still sold by "Bolt on Bits" for £8.89 each, so cheap and cheerful. The light beam was bright but in no way penetrating, like quality lights such as Lightforce, but you get what you pay for.

The same ebay seller has LED lights, same size (125mm) (each with 9 LEDs) for £100 per pair. I can't decide without seeing them in the flesh if they are just a boy racer showy gimmick or a sign of improved technology.

Any thoughts or any experience of LED spotlights? Is it the future?

Main use for roof lights is night time green lane type stuff where overhanging branches are common.

thanks in advance

I was at the cv show in Birmingham with a supplier tbr and on the stand were led laser lights, in the end we got stopped from switching them on because the other stands were complaining. These retail around the same as light force but I will be placing a order once I can afford a set (tbr also fitted them for top gear). Not sure on the ones you have looked at as not seen them working but I would say LEDs are definitely a improvement and the way forward.

Recently took a risk and bought an LED work light from ebay. It cost about £30 and the light is very impressive, although it spreads and is not focused and has minimal long distance penetration but the light is VERY bright. LED lights usually give out a very white and cold light which takes some getting used to.

I was very impressed with the quality and light output, I would buy LED again every time.

I have 2 LED lights on the bullbar and 4 on the roof rack of my Defender, they're great - very bright and the colour is far better than incandescent as they pick out detail better.

I could post a photo if you like when I get home.

Here are some photos for you:

One thing to bear in mind is that the light they cast is very directional, on the back I have normal incandescent lamps to light up a wide area.

Just need for these to come down in price a bit now: http://www.mudstuff.co.uk/Defender LED Headlamps.shtml

many thanks, I think I'll take the plunge with, 4 led roof lights, unless I win the lottery then I'll be in touch with mud stuff!! Thank you AliV

I was looking into getting the exact ones the op mentioned and wondered if I could run all 4 from 1 original Landrover spotlight switch (td5 age) or if I'd need a switch each pair? If anyone could shed some light (no pun intended) that would be great, and sorry to thread jack

the switch isn't the issue, it will be the cabling and the relay. However you should be ok to use cables and relay designed for 2x55w because 4x27w is a fraction less.

I should add that I ended up getting 4 x 9LED (i.e. 27 watts per light) from an ebay seller from China. Just over £100 including delivery and they came in less than 10 days

very happy, certainly much brighter than the 100w rubber ones they replaced. I am sure that more expensive led lights would throw a longer beam but for the money I am delighted with quality and performance.
