any tips on sealing theses stud type plugs with no flange?..

Manual Gearbox is a large 32mm AF Plug with a flange isnt it? which has a sealing ring that goes between the plug and the Gbox.

sadly no - its a stud type which relies solely on the the thread seal and the tbox drain plug is the same. rave refers to loctite 290 for thread blocking but I was trying to avoid dropping good oil, drying the surfaces and waiting 4hrs for it to cure.

you can only tighten it, any sealant would need plug removing to dry the threads to a proper job ,you could try undoing it half way and smearing the threads well with an oil resistant silicone sealant then retighten it

It sounds like for some reason you have a filler plug screwed into your drain plug hole. As has already been said, I would have thought it should be a flanged drain plug with a copper sealing washer.

Very strange, of the 3 I have looked at recently the Tbox is a threaded plug, but the gbox was a flanged plug.
You should not need to wait for it to dry if you use a thread lock.

late r380s dont use the old plug they do use a plug similar to the filler

Strange I have changed the oil in an 03 plate and a 04 plate in the last two weeks both have the flanged plug on the Gbox drains.

Would be surprised if that was the case, on 3 different Discos 2's I have changed the Gbox oil on.....
the two above plus mine which is a 53 plate.Cheers

i cant answer for that but the last type of the r380 uses 3/16 square drive plugWould be surprised if that was the case, on 3 different Discos 2's I have changed the Gbox oil on.....

Reading the Bearmach advert, they do quote the flanged plug for:-
Land Rover Discovery 2 up to Vin 4A862659
Since the Vin on my 2004 D2 is A843xxx, it would appear that a flanged drain plug is a correct fitment in my case.
