Leaking from differential housing + transfer case (6x6)

Hi All,

Last month I changed all the oil of my Landy - named Wheely given the 6 wheels
I don't use Wheely often, but last week after it had been parked for a 5-6 days and noticed a big leak underneath - I brought it to the lube bay and had to top-up almost 1LT of oil in the auxiliary gearbox - the main one was still level... See the pictures - the leak is just after the auxiliary and at the joint of the rear axle.

I am in Ghana and mechanics are not too savvy on what to do to fix the problem, but once you give them the right parts and provide some guidance they can do magic - hence I would really be happy if you could tell me what pieces (part number) I need to buy to fix this up, and whether whilst I am doing this work and have these bits down I should do anything else. Wheely is a 1995 110 Defender - the gearbox got changed and put on the Discovery one (not sure if this is a useful detail) for the 200TDI.

The one behind the brake drum will depend on which transfer box you have fitted, and the seal on the front of the front rear axle depends on which axle you have fitted.
Does the front rear axle have a through drive?

Thanks @Oldseadog for your reply! - how can I be sure of what is the tranfer box fitted? Is there a serial number I can find? Wheely got some parts changed in his life-time and I'd rather double check and be sure of what he is fitting at the moment. The rear axle is the original one: 1995 110 - VIN: SALLDHMV8TA975201 - Does this provide any clue?

The serial number will be stamped in one of 2 possible places, either on the bottom left of the main casing or on the earlier vehicles right at the bottom of the left hand side face of the main casing obscured by the exhaust pipe in which case you will need a knife (to scrape the muck off) and a mirror.

Look at ashcrofts website they tell you and show decent pics of where to find serial numbers etc

Success...or almost!

I found the serial number of the transmission (28D2 89013E) and of the front axle (64I 17310A) and lazy axle (the 3rd axle -42s17124a )... but not the one of the rear axle (the 2nd axle) despite I have scrubbed the whole axle to the bone!! Could it be that as part of the conversion CarMichael replaced the axle with one without serial number?

Besides this mystery, now that we know the type of transmission (model LT230 transfer case), what parts do I have to buy to stop the leaking (captured in pictures IMG 2012 and 2013) ? The front axle sweats rather than leaks as the transmission and rear axle do...

For the rear axle I posted some pictures of it from side (IMG-2015) and from the back (IMG- 2017). anyone can recognize it? The leaking is captured in picture IMG2014 and IMG-2015)

First thing I notice is two of the bolts on the transferbox lower plate are missing!

good spot! will make sure I fit them as soon as we are working on fixing the leakage!

Some info which I was able to put together on the rear axle is that:

• seems to be a leaking pinion seal.
• It is a Salisbury axle, not Rover,
• reccomended to also change the pinion flange where the seal contacts the smooth surface as it may be worn or damaged

any thoughts?

Yes it is the pinion seal leaking on the Salisbury axle.Not a big job to remove flange and check seal contact area before ordering a new one.
The missing bolts may be the cause of one of your oil leaks.
You will need transfer box output seal [front and rear the same] and some new hand brake shoes as they will be oil contaminated.
Gasket for transfer box plate may be handy.

for the rear salisbury you need 1 x 607183 gasket,1 x aeu2515 seal ,1 x 607197 collapse spacer, and probably best to get 607185 flange and 90608545 nut, you will need to make a tool 3ft or more to hold the flange whilst nut is tightened collapsing the spacer , tighten till theres just no free play then just nip a bit more rock the flange to ensure its not too tight as preload with used bearings doesnt want to be what new bearings would need, for the t/box you need ftc4939 and frc2464 fibre washer to seal end of the shaft / flange joint, rear flanges on t/box asre normally good as they are not exposed to the weather and dirt ,front if you do it get a new flange frc5442 uses the same seal and washer as the rear, new prop studs are frc3602 for the rear and bt606101l for the front,nuts are nz606041l
you need a 32mm socket for rear axle flange nut and a 30mm socket for the t/box flange nuts

• 1 x 607183 gasket,
• 1 x aeu2515 seal ,
• 1 x 607197 collapse spacer,
• 1x 90608545 nut
  
• 607185 x1 --> can't find it on paddock - how come? i read online that it has been replaced by STC4457 - is that correct?
• would it be worth during the bearings as well (or anything else) whilst I am at it with half the axle dismantled?

• 1x ftc4939
• 1 frc2464
• 1x frc5442
• ? x frc3602
• ? x bt606101l
• ? x nz606041l
• what about the hand brake shoes that would be oil contaminated? what's the part number?

you cant do the pinion bearings without dismantling the diff id just do seal unless your forced to, if hand brake cable runs straight to the rear of hand brake back plate which it looks like it does shoes are stc1525 which will most likely be icw100030 now,bolts are m8 x 30 fs108301l, out put bearings are stc1130 1 front 1 rear both can be changed with box in situ

you probably can only get the kit now and not just the flange,stc4403 which will come with seal and a nut so you will only need for rear axle
