Hi everyone,
My td5 defender has started playing up when I start it fires straight away but chucks out white smoke and starts missing like there is fuel in the bores then I do the 5 pumps on accelerator and leave it bleed through I have to repeats his 3 or 4 times before it will run fine then it will be fine all day it’s just mornings. I have done the injector washers, replaced all the non return valves on filter housing and done the fuel filter and checked all the fuel pipes for cracks or squashed pipes and I have just ordered a new fuel pump for the tank to try but seems to be fuel still getting to tank over night I’m running out off things to try and getting very frustrated with it now. Anyone else had this problem I would love to know how you resolved it. Engine oil stays the same hight so not getting into engine oil

Many thanks

I can remember some of them having a problem with the fuel filter housing going porous?

How old is the fuel rpessure reg on the back of the engine?

Did you order a decent pump? Is there weeping around regulator? Is current pump noisy? Have you checked red ecu plug for oil? Have you checked faults via nanocom/Hawkeye?
You say you bleed it each time - does it sound like it’s gargling when you do it?

The pump I have ordered hasn’t come yet which is a genuine one, the regulator is dry, the current pump is not noisy at all sound normal with no gargling when I pump through not even really in the morning I guess it’s a bit louder first pump then goes normal again. And I haven’t check ecu red plug for oil.

You got nanocom or similar mate? Defo worth checking for faults. If your injector harness has failed, it will wet up red plug with oil causing all sorts of madness. I had failed reg and failed harness at same time and it would bog down, smoke, lose and gain power all sorts

Having unbolted my seats and got to ecu red plug wet with oil what’s my next step and what’s this indicate injector harness knackered ? Need to replace ?
That does indicate your harness is shagged mate. Next step, get some electrical contact cleaner and order yourself a good injection harness - genuine best! Replace harness, clean out red plug with contact cleaner and leave it hanging for a bit. Keep detaching it every now and cleaning it as it works it’s way from rocker cover all the way down inside of insulation on wiring.
Search td5 injector harness on here if need more info ;)

For future info mate, td5s aren’t as complicated as they might seem. It’s worth getting your own diagnostics in future. All issues are well documented on here too.

So I have done the injector wire harness also cleaned all red plug etc due to oil also fitted new fuel pump in the tank and still no go still chucks out smoke on first fire then it will just turnover and won’t fire again all I have left to replace is the fuel pressure regulator and a complete new fuel filter housing but I have done all the non returns on it any more thoughts

Check the actual fuel pressure engine end? I’ve never had to do this so can’t advise I’m afraid. I actually opened up my ecu and cleaned it as my failed harness was that bad that it started getting in. Do so at own risk though.

Did you check it for faults?? You could have an iffy sensor ie crank sensor but there’s no point just guessing. Really need a good reader mate if your gunna work on a Td5 yourself
