Hi Guys,

I had an interesting experience with Landrover this morning that I thought would be of interest to other folk who maintain their own vehicles.

I bought a Water expansion tank from my local Landrover dealer, for my 300Tdi. The original had sprung a leak, and being a pressure vessel I didn't want to muck about with glues, etc. When I got the new part home I had a look and found that the seams where the two halves are glued together didn't meet properly. So I put water in, it seems to hold water, but under pressure I don't really wanna risk it.

I called my Landrover dealer and they said that unless the part had actually failed they could not exchange it as faulty. They would send it back to Landrover, who would test it and if it passed the static pressure test I would be billed for the badly made part in addition to the replacement I was requesting. The Landrover philosophy seems to be that you should get 1/2 way up the mountain, blow your engine, then request a new part under the part warranty.

The only way around this is apparently to order another part, while you have the badly made one, under a mates name. Collect your mates part and return the original under your 14 days consumer protection. Personally I picked up my phone and bought from Craddocks. This is bad enough on my £40 bottle, for anyone with a bigger item this could hurt!

Landrover really are not what they used to be.... I verified this story with another dealer to make sure it wasn't just a weird branch. The accountants truly do rule Solihull.

That is right, the part hasn't failed so they wont replace it. If its going to leak then it probably will soon after you've fitted it, just fit it and run the engine with the cap on and watch for leaks, if it does, chuck it back at them and demand a replacement or refund.

Carefully, prise it apart at the seam so it leaks really nicely.
Make it a bit dirty and grotty like it failed in a typical oily Landy engine bay, and was taken off the car by a greasy-pawed mechanic at the roadside.

Then take it back .... and claim them for the costs of fitting the replacement part. In fact, get THEM to fit the next one ........ Naaahhhhh maybe not.
You might not want assholes like that touching your Landy.

Job done.

They want to play smart? Two can play that game.

However, if the part is unused with orginal packaging and receipt, you can get a refund regardless. Retail law - as long as it is with in stipulated number of days (sometimes 7, 14 or 28 days).

Alturnitively, inspect the part before perchase.

If the part is faulty, then the supplier should change it, it is immaterial what Land Rovers policy is, because you, the purchaser, are not dealing with them. You are dealing with the Land Rover dealer, and as such they need to change the item or if it fails within 28 days give you your money back. You do not have to either buy another item or wait whilst Land Rover examines the item. If the dealer will not play ball, just suggest getting trading standards involved
.

Hi Guys,

I took the part back and returned it under my 14 days, it's up to them if they wanna restock it. They know my issue and it didn't look convincing. I ordered a new part from Craddock, which is a different plastic. It's transparent, so I can see the water level through the plastic!!! How cool is that! Look and learn LandRover, now I know what the level is without peering into a dark tank to find out!

Cheers Guys!
