here is my landrover series 3 project bought a few months ago from bakewell derby and i am restoring it. first image is of when we got it onto the trailer at bakewell, the other image is just of the box after i took it off, the truck hasnt done much work for the past 16 years of its life and nothing in the past 6-7, its a 1981 truck, i have strip[ped back end down to the chassis and i am using a flap disk on a grinder to get all old paint and rust off ready to re paint it with some protective stuff. If anyone has any tips for the land rover series 3 i would like to hear them as i havnt done work ona car before but planing on doing this one up for road use once i pass my car test (17 march this year)

Looks an interesting project! :)

Chassis doesn't look too bad in the pictures, which is good, hopefully.

I'd be sandblasting that if you can, and then etch priming and painting it. Failing the blasting, you could treat it with fertan - but the most important bit is the inside of the chassis, which you can't see - so I'd be hosing it out, then fertan, then dinitrol / bilt hamber cavity wax... - plenty of info in here on rust treatment too ;)

yeah the chassis is in fairly good nick got about 5 small patchs to weld and some one didnt weld the out riggers very well so will alos try filling in the gaps they left there my plan is just to do it all by hand with it being my first project etc. what do you mean by hosing the inside out ?

Well done, that man. :)
We like to see younguns getting involved. Two reasons a) It means that future generations are carrying on the passion for LR b) Makes us think that maybe we're not just foisty auld feckers and that we might just be down with the kids ;):(
Good luck with it. Why don't you start a rebuild thread in the series or projects section of the forum, I reckon you'll get a lot of interest watching the build.
Disco1BFG is referring to the fact that a lot of dirt and detritus will have collected inside the chassis rails. Before you treat the inside with anything you'll want rid of as much of that as possible. If you can get a pressure hose with an radial nozzle on it and run it up and down inside the rails you'll get a lot of it out. If it's a high enough pressure you might take some flakey rust off too. This gives something like Fertan the best chance of doing it's job.

Well then, the holes that you're gonna make to "patch" the chassis will make fine access points for hosing out - which was nicely explained by Al203 in post #4 :)

If you go on the main webpage and click the Forums tab at the top of the page. You will then get a page and you can scroll down through all the various sub-forums of the site, such as News and announcements, LandyZone Merchandise, Introduce Yourself etc. Further down you'll see the different Landy sub-forums such as Series Land Rovers, Defender 90/110/130 etc. Loads to look at :)

Good. If well maintained and regularly serviced they are good engines. Spares available too. In today’s world you’re better with a petrol engine. Good luck with the project.

yeha the only down side is when you come to repairs u have to be carfull when welding and grinding (best to take fuel tank off) which u have to take all seat box out for
