Land Rover 90 rear brake pads...

Howdy... i'm currently going thru the process of getting my landy road-legal in republic of ireland.... not for the faint-hearted, i can tell ye!

anyway, as usual i'm trying to deal with anything that might fail before it goes in for MOT and have noticed the rear brake pads are looking a bit low (apparently 3mm is the minimum?!)

now.. bearing in mind mine's an '84 vehicle it must've had a replacement rear axle at some point to have rear discs... trouble is i have no idea where the axle might have come from... chances are it was off a disco (if they fit on defenders which i'm sure i heard somewhere they do).... if so does anyone have any idea which brake pads i should go for? or have i got to take 'em out and try to match them with the pictures on various websites... there seem to be many different ones about and for varying prices... even saw a complete set of 4 pads on ebay for a fiver!

so... 1. how can i tell which axle i've got (and does it make a difference anyway)
and... 2. which pads do i get?!

thanx in advance and sorry for sounding like a dunce but i'm new to all this!!

I had the same problem - disco rear axle on a 90.
I ended up taking the old pads with me to my local Landy Independent and matched them up that way.

If you can find the axle number on it (im not sure where its stamped) and then google land rover axle numbers im sure you will find a list that tells you all about it.

Ive just found out the number is stamped into the top of the tube, if you can read it.

What does the drive flange look like? I have a feeling that a disco one, if they are all like mine, has a 'rounded' drive flange, where the end of the half shaft dnt stick out through it.

Yep... looks like its a dico one

of course the days of anything legible being on the axle are probably long gone... will have a go at cleaning it off tomorrow

i have noticed the pad has a protruding bit off the top - which looks to me like the bit where the abs sensor would go... so i'm guessing a disco mk1 would be my safest bet...
suppose i'll have have 'em off to be sure.

thanx y'all!

They will be STC9188 I would put money on it.

They are the same on the defender and disco, unless its the Disco2 axle, but I doubt it.

I thought that, but someone had fitted different calipers onto my axle at some point.
The pads I ended up needing were the ones intended for a 110 Sailsbury.

Well the pads for a 90 will be the same, there were different pads for the 110... I guess you have that... but based on it being a 90 or disco axle those will do you.

If you get onto the mintex page (they have a good image library with measurements so you can work out what you have) you can look up landrover pads. Then do a mintex to LR or lockheed part no. conversion and you can work out what you have.

I needed to do this for my front axle because I wasn't sure which of the 3 types for the early defenders I was.
