Hello,

I have recently acquired a 1989 Land Rover 90 with a 2.25td engine.

Last week it has been driving really well, however the other day it failed on me.

The symptoms are as follows:

Poor idle - Struggled to keep going, shacking and producing white smoke. With my foot lightly in the throttle it seemed ok, until I then remove my foot.

No revs - It struggled to get up a hill in first (I was doing 5mph at the best). It seems to rev poorly when out of gear too.

Starts reasonably well still but seems to be misfiring when warm.

I thought it too be a fuel problem, so I have replaced the fuel filter, air filter and lift pump - but still acting up!

I am a bit stuck now and looking for advice.

My explanation may not be the best, I'll try and give more explanation if required!

Right! A bit of an update, it will now idle with the occasional chuff of white smoke.

However, it will not rev much. I took it round the block and it won't get past 30mph in 4th! It seems to be holding it self back.

Please help!!

Any photos pf the engine? White smoke chuffing is unburnt fuel due to a miss fire, if you have clear pipe put some into the first leak off, look for air bubbles.

I'd check the air inlets and air filter (always the same checks for turbo's) and all air pipes for delamination inside and gunking up,

I'd lift the fuel pickup out of the tank and check the intank filter etc. A lot of very small amounts of crap in the fuel builds up after a few years!

I'd check all the fuel pipe connections are good, and remove all pipes, even the small ones around the motor and blow through with a compressor to clear them. Clean all the ends when you reassemble them.
