Hi all, just picked my reconditiond gearbox up, wondering if anyone can give some tips or advice on dropping the old one and fitting the new. It's a 1986 2.5 na 90 with the lt77. I am going to attempt it myself so any tips will be much appritiated thanx :)

Make sure you've had your weetabix unless you've got an engine crane.
Engine crane through the door is how I usually do it.

Planning to do this myself this year. As above, both the main and transfer boxes are very heavy/awkward. Plenty of posts on here that cover the job. take the doors off, floor panels out, seat box out if you can.
I'd like to join the main and transfer boxes first. Don't forget a new clutch and clutch release arm.

I can do no more than copy & paste the post I made on a similar thread on here yesterday.

All nuts & bolts and a relatively simple 1-person job (I did mine manually without the use of an engine hoist last time, not something to consider doing if you have a hoist handy but I didn't and just got on with it and didn't have any problems).
With the gearbox out you really ought to consider a clutch kit and rear crankshaft oil-seal, so simple while it is all dismantled but a real pain if you have to do it all again in the near future because one of them fails.

Thanx, I've got started stripping back on my own, I've got 2 mechanics who work on landrovers coming to help me now which will be great. So hopefully the old beast will be back on the road soon :)

Be thankful it isn't a td5. I've changed them on a 90 a disco 200tdi and a td5 90 and the worst was the td5 for some aweful reason. Maybe I hadn't had my wheetabix that day. With three of you it should be done pretty quick.

Got the box out fine and everything went well, dropped both props, took floor out lowerd transfer out and then gearbox came out underneath, Quick and easy. Going to out a input gear in the transfer box before it all goes back together. Hopefully be done soon.

I was going to make a thread on the strip and rebuild, not sure how many people will find it useful but as a novice iv found it not to bad, mainly just getting old bolts free. I will make one when I am done :)
