I am about to buy a petrol 1984 landy with 72k on the clock great condition. but am not sure wether the petrol is a good idea. I am driving it to Ukraine were the weather can get to minus 30 so need a petrol. any ideas or advice ?? I'm new to land rovers
 
Any tips on knowing if the engine is ok. I looked under the car and there is no rust but is has been oilwax coated recently so hard to tell. also the doors are perfect the look brand new. No rust on the bulk head or the a frame just worried about it being a petrol also do you know what kinsd of millage i could get out of it . i'm doing a 3000 mile trip in it hopefully
 
i think it will take about a week to do the trip. But you think a petrol is ok it seems to have very low millage for an 84 model??

the miles is slightly irrelevant - where's this landy coming from ? ebay a dealer ?

do you have pictures ?

expect 20mpg and and an average speed of 45-50

I fear for your life, i really do. I realise you haven't had a landy before and i think you are being wildly optimistic if you think you can drive 3000 miles in a week. Seriously, not just for the vehicle but also for your health.

I would recomend you get it shipped to the ukraine, when you work out fuel, food, ferrys etc its going to be close, but at least you wont be deaf, hypothermic or dead.
 
yes have a couple of pictures will try to upload them. itscoming from a dealer but not a landy dealer. its up for 2.5k just had mot
 
i drove out last year in a 2004 90 and it took 6 days with two people. but yes probably longer this time, and the ferry is free and people are helping with the fuel. You see i work in an orphanage out there and am driving stuff out for the kids

I'm not questioning the quality of the vehicle..i'm more concerned about the journey itself. Are you alone? Do you have breakdown cover? What is your route? Are you doing this in winter?
 
No he took it off

crappy dirty smoke, mayo in the coolant, inability to start from cold, inability to idle at a steady speed, inability to rev freely, juddering when changing gears, steering wheel vibration at speed, gearbox jumping into neutral while underway, noise on overrun - there's so much you could look for

but - if it starts drives and stops when you collect it there's a betting chance it'll still be doing the same in 3000 miles time

might want to join a breakdown service just in case
 
3,000 miles in 7 days - roughly 400 miles a day, that will be tough going but it's definitely achievable. Do a full service on it before you leave, and carry a few spares and a good set of tools and you should be fine.
 
Thanks for you help you put my mind at rest i realise its a long journey but i'm going to average about 50mph i have verious places to stop of in germany prague and poland so i hope to take about 2 weeks and take my time.
