Hi all

Im thinking about changing my engine oil soon, according to the owners manual it needs 5W/40 fully synthetic, but im not sure on which brand is the best for this engine. Its the 4.4 V8 BMW engine, price is not really an issue as i want to put the best oil for this engine in.

Thanks
Matt

look at the owners manual for oil spec
But I can tell you oil is the biggest rip off going.
vw long life and bmw long life 4 =£30 + VAT trade at Factors

Yet GM dexo2 5w40 I buy for 12.50+vat a gallon (no I'm not trying to sell anything)

I put almost £100 worth of Mobil 1 in mine and the infamous Vanos death-rattle went much worse. I'd stick with the slightly more viscous stuff if I were you.

Don't use additives - Slick50 is liquid teflon in a can.

Castrol are the BMW and the Jag Land Rover supplier now (not that means an awful lot), so go with the Magnatec 5W30 or even a 10W40. The EDGE products are really for vehicles with DPF's. Most of the older engines like the M60/M62 may be better run on a decent 10w40.

Mobil 1 is the only oil worth spending extra on, other than that go for whatever spec you need. The Range sells 5 litres of fully synth for £19.99.

AFAIK no Castrol engine oil is actually fully-synth, they are synth/dino blends. Castrol actually used their muscle to get the specs changed so they could call their semi-synths fully synth. Halfords were recently selling Castrol oil remarkably cheaply - I'd buy at those prices other than that you're wasting your money by buying it over generic stuff such as Comma, CarLube etc.

I always buy mine in 25ltr containers from motor factors @around £50-£60 where as a 5ltr is around £25 mmm the more you buy the cheaper it is considering mine take 9.5lts im better off
