2003 4.4 L322. Only 60k. Have strange kinda hum/ vibration in top gear at around 30-50 mph. I've read it's possible torque converter. I can get it to do it only really in top gear, off then on accelerator gently. If it kicks down it goes. Anyone else had similar?

Classic Torque Convertor Lock Up Clutch issue....sorry to say!

Do some research on here for symptoms and also search for RRPhil's posts on rangerovers.net but I would try a fluid and filter change first....I had a vibration similarly....after a fluid and filter change, it has been 95% better!

sounds very familiar, mine used to do it at very low revs by holding the throttle in a fixed position and when going into a slight incline. if it stops almost dead on 56 mph its most likely TC as thats when the lock up clutch kicks in i think, also if the rev counter waves up and down slightly in time with the rumble, that's another sign, as hippo says, much lower mileage than is common, i think 100K + usually

mine used to change up when you might expect it to change down up a hill with light revs and it used to rumble then as well but not always in top gear

i had my torque converter rebuilt at sussex autos. has been great for many thousands of miles

although these people are probably best all round

Welcome to the website of JP (Automatic Transmissions) Ltd in Somerset, UK

RRphil or Bemble is god when it comes to these, i dont use the term loosely either, he could literally strip one and rebuild blindfolded

Saint is next in line i would say,
(smoke and arse spring to mind)

have a read through my thread below if you want to scare yourself

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/oil-leak-gearbox-229433.html

bottom line is if you get somebody to do it i would guess £1k - £2.5k depending on whether they convince you to rebuild your transmission as well

you could search Dr tranny shudder fix if you are bored

as saint says, an oil and filter change might help especially if any has leaked out dropping oil pressure

good luck

Thank you for your comprehensive reply, chicken-man. Will order a reman one from Jpat.co.uk at £240 +VAT. Got a good guy who can fit it weds for £200. Now, oil? How much and of what? Can't really stretch to fill rebuild and I'm hoping that the low miles are on my side regards that. Seems I've just caught the problem early enough before things start breaking up and doing more damage!

Change the oil & filter before you splash out on a new TQ. May just fix it.:)

its worth a go as i did but ended up spending out on the oil and filter again which is about £125 but i was much higher mileage and i had a leak anyway so the box had to come out.
i dont think they tend to break up on the ZF box but have a search as saint says for RRphil or bemble.

The ZF box takes mobil ATF LT71141 which i got from opie oils, either via ebay or their own site

6 litres for a refill as the TC is like a flying saucer and holds a fair bit or 9.9 litres from dry so as the box is coming out i guess 9.9, and i went for a genuine filter and gasket which island 4x4 did the lot or britcar are quite good in general

your box is the ZF5HP24 as you probably already know

£200 is a really good price, i am guessing your man has all the gear but saint gave me a tip of using a b&q type fence sprayer to refill the box as it has to be done with the engine running and its a bit hidden but that worked a treat with the end removed and a bit of hose attached.

its a high chance that its torque converter and when i looked around at the problem i would say it was that in 95% of the cases that had similar symptoms but there were 1 or 2 that still had the symptoms after replacing the TC
