So after definitely deciding on ordering some Cooper ST Maxx’s I tried everywhere local including a Cooper dealer but none of them could source them. Rather than buy online and hope I could get more in the future if I needed them I’ve gone for a set of more readily available Kumho MT51’s from a local tyre shop that appear to be into their 4x4’s.

They seem well reviewed and comparable to the ST Maxx, my only concern being the lack of an EU rating as they’re classified POR. Good news is I’m paying less for five then four coopers would have cost me, has anyone used them on a landy?

What's your driving like? Would the kl71s suit more? Slitty tires in slitty sizes but if you can get a set to fit not a problem.

I liked the ST MAXX PRO but I'm probably going to have a new set of STTs 235/85 16 or some Maxxis Buckshot MT764 32x9.5x16

From what I’ve seen kumho have weak sidewalls,
Hope they are not as weak as them early Grabber AT2s!!! I witnessed several of them end up as scrap after nothing more than a bit of dry weather sandy soil green laning, they were €200 a piece then too so by no means a cheap tyre!
Certainly not a problem with the Cooper STT, they'll survive a nuclear blast I'm sure of it, I can drop tyre pressures down to 10 psi without fear of popping a bead or hurting the sidewalls.

I don’t need a full mud tyre for the sort of laning I do, most of it involves a trek on the motorway too so an aggressive AT is what I was after. I haven seen anything negative about them online, they are apparently heavily built and can run at lower pressures. These are apparently designed for the Australian outback market so hopefully they will be tough enough!

For anyone that’s interested they’re on and look massive compared to the 235/70’s that were on it. Car certainly feels taller and rides better. No noticeable road noise below 60mph, you do become aware of them when you pass that but the disco is so noisy at 70 anyway that if you didn’t know what to listen for I don’t think you’d notice. Pretty sure I need to adjust the steering stops but not by much, I may get away without doing any trimming, here’s hoping!

Spot the difference....

245/75 16 don't need trimmed, perhaps steery stops but that's it.

My Disco came home on 235/75 15, poxy little things, great for towing a heavy trailer but ran out of gears by 60mph and the engine was screaming away as it was under geared.

upped it to 235/85 16, not too much just standard Defender sized tyres but what a bloody difference!

The 245/75’s certainly look right for the car, I was tempted to go bigger but it’s staying on standard height suspension and I really don’t want to cut anything unless I really have to, fingers crossed I’ll get away with it!

For anyone that finds this in the future I did have to trim a little from the inner lip of the rear arch but not much, the cleared but barely. Has made a big difference to the ability of the car though, Speedo is pretty much spot on with a sat nav and more importantly they were superb in the snow!
