After yet another HGF on my 98 Freelander 1.8,this time it won't fix-even with the new-style gaskets it's still not sealing,what I need to know is which other K series engines I could fit as I can't find a 1.8,is a 1.6 out of a Rover 200/400 usable or even a 2.0 litre out of a Rover 820 ?,any feedback would be very greatfully received,thanks.
 
loads of choice, 75/45 etc coil pack or distributor?

thanks for that,it is a R-reg and is a distributor.Do the Rover engines match up to the freelanders gearbox OK?,and is a 1,600cc OK to pull the Freelander around?.

Some even say the 1.8 doesn't have much grunt for the size of the vehicle. I've never driven a 1.8 Freelander, but I've driven a BMW 316 with a 1600cc engine, and that only weighed 1300kg. It wasn't very impressive in terms of performance. That said, the engine was bullet proof, unlike the K-series... As you know, the K series isn't known to be a particularly strong engine. With that in mind, putting an underpowered K-series engine in a big car probably isn't a recipe for success.

I don't know what it involves, but have you looked into whether or not it would be possible to do a diesel conversion? I'm not sure on the feasibility of this though, it may not work out cost effective. It's perhaps worth looking into though.

Go fir a "T" series injun.
The rover 220 turbo lump matches up to the hippoo gearbox without too much hassle, but you will need the complete engine managent system as well.
 
How come you need a new engine? Have the liners dropped?

If the bottom block is ok you could use just a new cylinder head. The reason it's gone again is probably due to the head becoming soft and porous, it could have even cracked.

You've less chance of the gasket going again on a new head rather than a used engine.

I'd say a 1.6 is definitely a no-no in a freelander. Even if tuned to produce the same power as the 1.8 it would be pushed way too hard.
