Just bought Freelander 2 , tyre question?

Just picked a Freelander 2 and the garage fitted two new tyres on the front and I seem to remember reading somewhere that if you are only changing two tyres you should always fit the new ones on the back is this correct for the Freelander 2? I have tried to search but only found one thread and they where talking about a Freeelander 1 and I wasn't sure if the drive train was the same on a 2?

Accross the same axle should be fine but I'd do rear first cos the fronts wear quicker (steering, braking and drive)
