Hi

I have just bought a 2005 55 plate Rangerover Sport 2.7 HSE with 52,000 miles on the clock and gave £18250 for it from e reputable dealer.

I did some research before taking the plunge and have seen mixed reviews on reliability.

Basically I have bought it to keep my kids safe whilst on the road and now I am reading about electrical faults where the car can just die whilst doing 70mph in the fast lane amongst several other major faults!!!!!

Are there any common faults that I am pretty much guaranteed to come across?

Can anyone reassure me that I havent bought a death trap that is going to be in the garage al the time??

Many thanks

Mike

Lol.....£18k well spent then???????? Can anyone give me a list of the more common problems and what sort of money I am looking to get them sorted?

Am I better off using a main dealer ( at inflated prices ) or a Specialist? Does it affect resale value that much??

Thanks again

Mike

Regular maintenance, don't leave problems to the last minute and research, research, research.....will keep the thing mobile in most cases....

But they are unreliable....but take what you read with a pinch of salt, people only ever talk about the bad bits, and then they embelish...

I have not heard of a sudden stop on a motorway before, most often this is just a reduction in engine power when the engine goes into limp home mode....

It won't be a sudden stop, it will be as if you have taken your foot off the pedals and are rolling to a lower speed allowing you to get tot he side of the road safely.

Sounds to me like it could be a complete money pit!! Can I expect it to be in the garage half a dozen times a year or more??
So looking at the mileage and thinking....."Hmmmm there is 3 years of trouble free motoring" was a mistake then!!!!
Presumably the thing will tell me when it has a problem so I have chance to sort it before things go dramatically wrong??

Thanks again

All LRs are money pits. Mine visits the garage regularly with a "see you soon" when I collect it.

Wouldn't swap it for the world, just go into ownership with your eyes wide open.

Silverlandy came from a dealer, she's actually a fab example and I'm really pleased with her but since Nov 2011, she's been in for new rear air springs, new elec window mechanism and recently unblocking of air con pipes. Not too bad really.

Had an RAC warranty with mine. Not Worth wiping my butt on TBH. Way too many ifs and buts and clauses on them.

Anyhooo, don't worry, the benefits outweigh the pitfalls IMO.

Range Rovers are a lot of like drains. When nothing is wrong no ones talks about them, but when they stink everyone will tell you to get it sorted.

My P38 is getting close to 180,000 miles and so far it is just regular wear and tear needing replacing. Just like with any vehicle. Sure Range Rovers get bad press, but a vehicle is only as reliable as you make it. If you try to ekk out services to last that little bit longer, put off replacing a failing part for a few extra weeks. They tend to go up in a cloud of smoke.

All vehicles are a money pit, very few vehicles increase in value, so you'll always lose money on it.

Some are good, some are bad....

if it has been looked after it will last a life time, yes they are frustrating, but we would never be with anything else....heck I have just got back from a 500+ mile trip to Yorkshire just to get a wheel nut off...(loooong story) but I love my Rangie...

They can be expensive, but don't forget you have just bought a £55k car for Mondeo money - tehy will still have £55k running costs.

Most faults are just electrical gremlins that are niggly but not catestrophic....

Relax and look at a decent Warranty, the AA or Warranty Dircet are pretty good, but most aren't worth the paper they are written on - they are not in business to help you out, they are their to make money pure and simple.

Just enjoy driving it, and when a problem arises, deal with it then - but just enjoy the drive and basking in Range Rover ownership....

I have looked at the warranties and there is a lot of "Small print" so I will probably opt for the self-warranty!! The dealer I bought it off gave me a 3 month parts and labour warranty so lets hope anything major goes wrong in that period!!!!!

Any Opinions on LR Specialist centres?

Thanks

Anyone got any preventative maintanance tips for me apart from regular servicing? Any parts I should have changed etc.....??

not many sport owners on here as far as im aware.

just general maintenance i guess, gearbox filter and oil change for sure, engine oils and filters, crankcase filter etc...

Thanxs Alarmfitter........................................Not so thanx Hippo!!!!! :O) :O). I take it you have a Sport?? Any major problems?? just looking at the AA Breakdown parts and garage cover coming in a £147 for a years cover up to 5 claims for £500 a time!! Sounds ok doesnt it??
