Hi all - when I pick up my 1988 turbo 90 this week and things start falling off it and it conks out, is this the right section to ask questions about how to put the bits back on etc?? Really excited about getting this vehicle, hopefully the reality will be just as good haha

Yep this is the place, from your intro I assumed you had an old 90 with a 12j or 19j but a 98 will be a 300tdi Defender....not that it makes a lot of difference

Was a bit disappointed that the flaps/vents in the front under the windscreen had some plastic covering over the inside, I thought they would just open out like a door

If it looks like someone grabbed an engine from the 50's and stuck a turbo on it...that'll be the one :)

I resent your mocking of the utterly superb 19J engine, they are without a doubt one of the better land rover engines.

Photos please, that doesnt sound right at all.

Yes it did even start and run (eventually)

I will get some this week when I collect it - the plastic panels are like horrid looking vent covers over the flaps

Thers always bodges, it comes with the territory.

I assume you have googled for info on the mighty 19j engine and its foibles?

I have not - yet but will have a look now, just drove it back - not surely I would use the word “mighty” to describe the engine though

I shoudl have added a smiley face after the word mighty:D

Kepp your eye out for a 200tdi near to you as you are bound to need it at some time.

Yes Sort of in the shelf on the front below the window - it’s supposed to be there ! It’s just that I was expecting to be able to open the flaps and look out
You can cut holes in the plastic vent covers to see through them fully, then stick some cardboard over the windows and drive around like you’re in a tank.
