Is this a turbo problem?

Hi all, and Merry Xmas + HNY!!

I've just driven back 80kms from Brussels to discover the engine running a little intermittently.

Having searched the posts on 'Turbo' I'm wondering wether anyone recognizes the symptom(s) as I'm a little flummoxed? ( TD4 2001)

When I accelerate, whilst in gear, there is a sound as if the air-con or air vent is coming on - it appears to happen at the same time the turbo would normally kick in. Maybe a split pipe? I'm not sure? It doesn't seem to happen when I accelerate when stationary.

If I were to have to drive the car back home (800kms to France) is it likely that I would damage the turbo if it wasn't working properly, or is it simply a matter of taking a risk.... as usual?

Joyeux Noel, and happy festering...:)

split intercooler hose ? especially the long one which passes across the top of the front of the engine where it rubs on the mounting screws.

you could do a temporary repair with duck tape, a couple of cable ties and a coke can if you need to make a journey.

Sounds as though you may have a split in one of the hoses or a clip is loose and theris a leak, usually at one of the elbows. Another place to look is the cross pipe near to the dipstick where it reats on the head of a screw which wears a hole in it.

Thanks all - I'll check it out in the morning.

I'm surprised it doesn't do the same thing when I'm stationary - maybe it's only when under load, and maybe it's getting progressively worse?

I've tried a combi-botch with tape and a coke can as it's a 2cm split..... I'm hoping it will do the trick until I get back to frogland!
