Hello all

I was driving along the other day, just came over the brow of a hill and a metallic sound came from under the Defender. At first I thought something was catching the hand brake drum or a spring or something had come loose in the handbrak drum. Anyway having removed it today there doesn't seem to be any debris in the drum and the action of the system does seem to work OK.

However, obviously I took the rear prop off to get the drum off and while I had her up on axle stands I thought I would run the engine and see if the noise could be isolated. I put her in first and let her run but surprisingly with the rear prop off the front wheels or the front prop did not turn? Is this normal??

Also I can hear a slight rumbling from the transfer box. Feck!

So I wonder if you guys could give me the benefit of your experience and let me know what you think!

Thanks

unless you had it in diff lock then its quite normal for the drive to go out the easiest route ie the rear drive flange with no resistance on it

drop the oil and take a look at the state of it that should help narrow down the culprit, what you dont want is lots of bits of metal in there, refill and see if its any quieter.

Many thanks. While taking to prop off I also notice on of the UJs was stiff. I'm going to replace that too.

Not a good idea to run the transfer case without it in CDL for too long, the center diff has to work overtime, can become oil starved and weld the planet gears to the cross pins = bang....

Quick update. It was the UJ! Who'd have thought that it would make that kind of noise! I followed Buster's instructions and fitted a new on from Padock's and serviced the prop. I also checked and greased the front prop and now she runs sweet as a nut! Buying the £11 tool to remove the prop nuts was a good investment as was a set of replacement nuts and bolts. Thanks for your hep with this guys!
