Is my R380 gearbox knackered?

First time LR owner, I have owned a 110 300tdi CSW for about 4 months. A couple of months ago I drove on motorway for a couple of hours and when I came off I noticed rumbling noise that seemed to be coming from the gearbox with vehicle at idle, checked various threads on here and was unsure what it (clutch, gearbox, t'box etc) was so decided to change oil (put in MTF94 and there was plenty of oil in box when drained) and see what difference that made. That seemed to improve things until today, was back on motorway for first time since gearbox oil change, fifth gear, heard a rumbling noise that worried me badly, came off and visually inspected underneath, nothing to see then drove home on A and B roads at low speed. I can select all gears and the gears don't jump out when selected. The only other thing of note is an intermittent clunking sound when letting out clutch when changing gear. Any ideas what the problem might be or can somebody help me to diagnose or should I take it to a garage?

Propshafts ? have you greased ujs lately? Doesn't sound like a gearbox issue.

There were some fine metal particles on magnet attached to sump plug, nothing too concerning (or so i thought).

Not sure about when the last time the uj's were greased - i haven't done them

A few are no problem.

Worth checking the ujs, I would think, maybe the previous owner didn't grease them either.

I would just change the UJs them as a matter of course. They dont' cost much, they're not difficult to replace and by having new UJs you can start your process of elimination more accurately. I recently had a similar rumble. All UJs were new and I was at my wit's end when I got this brainwave to check the A-frame ball joint. Grasped it, prepared to apply brute force but it moved up and down by a few mm at the slightest touch! New ball joint, all silent :)
