Is my alternator shot???

Hello (again)

Went out in my classic this morning, and after a short while it started to run a little rough.

Went home, and when I turned the ignition off, the battery light came on!!!
When I turn the ignition on, and I'd expect to see the battery light, it stays off.

Am I right in thinking those are the symptoms of a blown diode pack??

Alternator diodes or a short in the wiring:eek:

I've checked it visually and it all looks ok.

I'm going to try and get this alternator bench tested before i do anything else..............if I can find someone who can do it!!!

The diode pack can be tested with a multimeter, if you have one, when removed from the alternator.

which include all the parts you need for a complete refurb including bearings, diode pack, regulator, brushes and slip rings.

The diode pack is quite a straightforward job if you have a soldering iron (or at least it was on my A127 alternator.

I didn't realise repair kits are so cheap.

I'm going to try and refurb it, and if that fails, Ill replace it!!!!

I don't need the car for another 6 weeks so I have plenty of time!!

I did the job myself just before Christmas and had no problems.

There is a very helpful set of videos which show exactly how the whole job is done (on an A127) which I studied carefully before I started.

The front bearing replacement was even easier than shown in the video because mine was held in place by three self tappers screwed into the casing. Once they were removed the bearing pushed out by hand with no need for a hammer.

Mine was only giving 12 volts, took it to a local mechanic who cleaned it and for a couple of days it was okay, then nothing. Then I removed the regulator from the back cleaned all the connections and now I'm getting a healthy 14V from it not always scrap
