My steering box was replaced with a new(not recon) Adwest unit not long ago, from day one untill now the steering seems stiffer than it was with the old worn box, is this normal? .... it's not very stiff like there is no servo assistance just a bit stiffer than it was and the steering wheell doesnt come back well by itself like it did before, it needs some help... i thought it would settle but now i want some confirmation.... it's well bled and the pressure is OK, my mechanic measured it but didnt touch the adjuster... shall i loosen the adjuster a bit?

it would sound like its adjusted to much , this can be the rack adjuster as well as the sector shaft adjuster, your not going to be able to adjust the rack in situ but slackening the top adjuster might be enough, 19mm nut and 6 mm allen key ,slack adjuster a few turns ie anti clock wise, then you rock the input shaft whilst tightening adjuster till you can feel the play between input shaft and sector been removed, box must be central when adjusting

Thanks for the quick reply m8... the rack adjuster is above my skills i'll have to go to my mechanic for that, i might be able to work with the top adjuster if i knew how to reach it cos from above it's impossible for me, all kind of pipes and the ACE pump are in the way

You can get to it through the jungle of pipes. I've adjusted mine in the past no probs. Its easier though with long extensions and an Allen socket. I also just rocked the steering shaft by hand as I adjusted the box.

Do you have ACE? cos i can see that without that would be much easyer, i'm wondering if i could get to it beneath the wheelarch if i remove that liner

Yes I have ACE. Or used to (don't get upset) but the pipes are still there. Obviously you need to remove the engine and rad covers. It is accessible. I know from experience as I have renewed mine twice (recon) and now need a third

you can get at it easier with the rad cowl etc removed ,slack nut with a socket and long extension or a couple of shorter ones,a socket type allen key is best too

Thanks guys, i'll attack it tomorrow...if this adjustment won't help i'll go to the mechanic for the other one

that's why i went for new cos i can't afford a mechanic for this job too often... the original one lasted 180K miles so i hope this one will last at least half of that

TBH..If its anything more than the top adjuster, I would be going back to where I got it from. Those things aren't cheap as you will be well aware.

thinking harder .... please imagine guys how could that be on mine cos it's LHD  ... maybe on a RHD is doable but on this one for my skills seems impossible

it's not that bad for me to send it back to UK where i bought it from :)

The penny drops..:p

It's the ACE pump and it's pipes there also the air intake and left radiator hose is straight above the adjuster :( ... sombody told me that there's a latch behind the wheel to be removed exactly for this purpose and it's approachable from there quite easy below all that crap above it...i'll see tomorrow

Update: About half of turn back on the top adjuster and it's 99% OK, i/m confident it will settle after some greenlaning
