is it my gear box (p38 r reg 2.5 DSE)

My range rover has started loosing power. My wife has been using it for the last few months and after getting in last week it struggled to get up to speed. The engine is increasing PRM but the car isnt accelerating too well. What is my first step. How can I test the gearbox , i have heard mentioned a stall test , anyone got the test for this model?
ps its an auto box

Sounds like an auto box or converter fault if the engine is performing ok
see if you have a local autobox specialist near by.........Take it over and let them give you a diaganois on whats wrong.

Do you know how to check the fluid levels in the gearbox ? and are you sure the engine is okay. Double up on the diagnosis as in my experience and to my cost the parts are much cheaper than you might think. Did it myself the second time as i was faced with a 1000 pound bill, cost me 150 for genuine drive chain and 100 pounds to hire a fourpost ramp and 50 pounds for the transfer box to be dropped. I'm sure the car has to be running to check levels but someone will comfirm this.

Stall test - Hard on the brakes and floor the throttle. The RPM the engine rises to is the stall speed. You may have to dig around to find out what it should be - cant remember if its 1200 or 2000 rpm......

Only hold it there for a short while......

I spoke to a bloke yesterday ( not bloke in the pub) and he told me how to check the level.
Run the car untill the oil is warm ( 5 miles) put the box in drive and put the brakes on. At this point measure the level of gear box oil. Also smell it for evidence of a burnt smell. Oil should be bright cherry in colour.
Reason for the above is that otherwise level will read high as oil hasnt got into some part or other of the box.

I think you will find that the engine & gearbox have to be cold for you to check the levels, this is what rave says

1. Ensure vehicle is level, then select ’P’ (park) and
start the engine.
2. With the engine running at idle speed and both
footbrake and hand brake applied, move the
selector lever to position ’1’ and then back to
position ’P’.
3. Still with the engine running remove dipstick,
wipe using lint free cloth.
4. Reinsert the dipstick fully and withdraw again to
check the level.

Unfortunatly if the diesel is the same as the petrol they took the dipstick off the later models because they were getting too many people overfilling the box. The two guys by me used to work for landrover and set up on their own and i'm sure you just have to warm it up in neutral and check the level when running. On mine the level plug is by g-box cooler pipes and some should come out, don't let too much out.
Bit tricky without a four post ramp i would have thought.

This method is only for models upto my99 but is a bit contradicting as the dipstick says on it to check cold while idling in neutral as you stated Nick the later models have to checked by the filler plug i believe.
