Is it legal to tow a Freelander (1.8 2002 5dr) on a transporter trailer with another Freelander (2.0 1999 5dr)?

Or is the weight too much.

I've done it before for locally over a short distance, but contemplating a 15 mile trip and wondering if its OK to or not in the eye of plod.

No
Towing capacity 2 tons. Trailer would need to be rated at least 2.5t if not 3.5t to be able to take the 1850kg of the Freelander

would not think so you need weight of towed car + weight of trailer, allowing for fuel in towed car, + crap in car would be more than the max of freelander, would think it would be around 1700kg for car + 500kg for trailer 2300kg, max for freelander is about 1800kg but you need to check all weights but it will be over

I've just told the bloke No. Why are wives so sensible! She says I already have a boat and another Freelander getting overgrown with weeds in the garden, why do I need another?

She don't get that its nothing to do with NEED :D

It all made "perfect sense" - I have a dead parts car (accident not legal) car getting overgrown that has a good K Series engine.

This is a legal 2002 with a dead K Series that I could get for about $500 - going value should be at least $3K. Thought was to swap motors.

Its been standing for at least 4 years though, so who knows what else is wrong with it even though the bloke outing it says it was perfect other than the engine. Might be into all sorts of other costs to get it going well and a long drawn out project.

Remind her next time she is looking at shoes

Funny you should say that, her niece and husband are coming over at the end of the month, we're doing a trip with them and they'll only be staying at our place probably for 2 nights... but she's out at the moment shopping for new pillows and lord knows what else!
Maybe Niece and Husband can sleep in Freelander in garden and put pillow money towards getting it fixed up?

Providing your trailer lights work and you have a number plate put a tarp over it and go for it! ;)
Mmm - I don’t know what the Kiwi coppers are like but an ordinary UK copper tends not to know much about towing law. Over here, I’d say you could probably get away with it, as long as it looks properly done/tied down etc.

On the roads round here, I see Jap pickups towing 3.5 tonne livestock trailers every day. Most of them aren’t rated for that but nobody worries.
