only got to check my gear box oils
(that I forgot the other week)

The daily rags and in particular the Express are well known for giving sensational but totally inaccurate long range weather forecasts. There is absolutely no mention of this possibility on Weather and climate change - Met Office so where on earth they get their information from I have no idea. They probably have a part-time cleaner that is a gypsy.

at the bottom they were referenced to along with others, And the Yank agrees with them;)

The last really severe winter was in in 1962/63 so we must be due one. I've got some photographs I took at the time, will try and get them scanned and put them up here. I remember my dad digging out a bus that had been outside our house for 6 weeks, nobody knew it was there until the thaw showed the roof. If it snows like that again I wont be leaving the house!

I remember those times, thing is, we never got a day off school and every one went to work:)

Yes, I still had to go to school. Was only a couple miles away but took a good hour to get there, every step you took you sunk into the snow. A lot of us had frost bite on our feet and hands for some weeks as the wind never let up and the snow eventually became solid ice. From January to March it either snowed every day or there was a heavy frost, I believe the temperature was down to -17c for most of the time. It was bloody cold at school so we had to do warm up exercises every couple of hours as the heating was frozen solid.

Cheers peeps , will do that then , gets some extra usage out of my ridiculously expensive exmoor trim muff ...my heater is brilliant anyway - not sure why/how as landy heaters that work seem to be a myth - but hey i'm not complaining ..;)

we get that and worse most winters but we are used to it our heating systems are designed to cope with the cold and the pipes are run in such a way as not to freeze but I am not ready at all for winter a load of wood for the boiler still needs to be chopped and stacked, the disco needs to have its polybushes finishing the chassis waxoiled the oils checked the steering put back on tracking done the list goes on but at least it has antifreeze to - 55 or -60 so all good, **** French box needs front wheel bearings and steering joints doing and a top up of concentrate and GLU needs to be run up and used

I'm ready- just a shame the Audi's and BMW's that will be blocking the road in front of me won't be:mad:

Why does a muff help the engine warm up faster? The stat shouldn't open till the engine is at the right temperature so there will be no water flowing through the rad anyway.

It limits the air flow that can get through.

As Doc said stop cold air going/drawn over the radiator. At 30mph the wind chill can be double that of air temp and at 50-60mph wind chile can be 3-4 times that. If temp gauge goes up over half on temp gauge just open it a bit. A close eye on temp gauge is necessary, but nothing to worry about with time you will know weather to have it opened or not.

Is it worth putting my rad muff on if it gets really cold or is that just for mud

when ever water freezes, get engine to operating temps ( which is better for it) and also allows a better heat inside the cab for driver and passenger. Ratty highly recommends them for winter use

as thor said ,i would

Td5 defender heaters aren't really up to the job when the temp is much below freezing point. The rad muff helps the temp get up quicker for defrosting the screen and then helps keep the temp up at tickover. I'd be an ice cube when using my landy for work in the winter if it weren't for my rad muff and ceramic heater.
