As some of you know i have taken my props off as i have a very stiff vcu but Iam just wondering what is the normal amount of play in the ird flange ?
Turning mine I have about 1/4 inch slack and have no movement in and out or forward and backwards if you like ?

It hasnt made any grinding or banging noises so i guess its ok ?

I didnt measure the backlash in mine when I had my props off. 1/4 inch, I guess measured at the outer edge of the flange, does not sound excessive. No fore-aft or side to side play in the bearings with yours is a good sign. Does the flange turn by hand smoothly, no tight spots or roughness? It would be worth draining the oil if youve not done so and checking for metallic particles and a silvery sheen to the old oil.

that sounds fine, there are too amounts of backlash, there is the first amount which is the crown wheel and pinion meshing and then the second part which os the rest of the box meshing

Yeh i can turn it with ease if one of the front wheels is off the floor play is on outer edge of flange and like i say no kind of any other play.
