Intermittent Starter - inhibit switch?

Cheers Keith,

I'll have a fiddle with it this evening assuming I can get it to start to get me home!

The problem is that when it's working, it seems to work every time so any investigation is pretty inconclusive. When it's not working, I'm not usually dressed for crawling around underneath!

Ok, very fed up with this now.

The starter will always fail to turn first thing in the morning. A bit of persistence with the key will usually eventually get it to spring into life, but it took 10 minutes this morning. It usually seems to work for the rest of the day although there might be one or two 'refusals' each time.

I can't find anything wrong with the connections - I even tried jumping the engine to earth to check the engine earths this morning with no effect.

I mentioned previously that when I turn the key and the starter just goes 'click', the dash lights don't dim. They still don't dim, but I noticed this morning that the lights on the HEVAC go out and the display blanks. Is that significant? I can't see how they are related in the wiring diagram, but hey.

I'm starting to think that it can only be the starter, but is there anything else I can try? It was such a ba&*4d to swap out last time that I really dont' want to have to do it again!

Kooky you have been told what the most likely problem is. Only starter and ignition circuits are active when key is turned to position three. Hevac and radio always go off until key is returned to position two.

Ignition switch itself as an outside possibility, also is there a relay involved in the starter solenoid circuit on the V8?

There is a relay, but I've tried swapping it with no effect. I suppose the ignition switch itself is a possibility but I wouldn't expect it to click at all if that were faulty.

I'm going to try swapping out the starter, but I'm worried that they won't refund it if they can't find anything wrong with it. Need it to stop raining first though - nothing worse than lying under the car in a river.

What seems a little inconsistent with the faulty starter theory is that every time I fiddle with the connections, it improves it slightly for a short period. For example, it turned over almost immediately when I tried it this morning after having another fiddle last night.
