Can I just double check. I need to clean or change the Inlet manifold on my freelander. She smokes like a trooper on acceleration. I"m also fitting new Air Filter.
2003(53 reg) TD4 Serengeti AUTOMATIC.
I"ve been reading the forums regarding doing this and it looks like ALL diesel Mark1 TD4 Freelander/ Rover 75 Inlet Manifolds will fit. IS THIS CORRECT ?
I don"t want to go buying the wrong manifold.
Cheers all

All M47 inlet manifolds are the same. And yes. If the EGR has been functioning, the inlet manifold will be clogged up.

Thanks for that Nodge. I have now ordered a 2nd hand manifold from Gentlemen of Salvage and will clean it properly b4 fitting.
thanks

Good luck with the cleaning, its a naaasty job :) I've just done mine (52 plate TD4 manual), started off with oven cleaner (6 cans), also tried brake cleaner - both worked to a degree but I got the best results by soaking it for a week in Gunk degreaser, then pressure washed it internally  Came up OK but then I looked like I'd been working down a coal mine and it made a piggin' mess in the garden ;). Make sure you take the MAP sensor out first, and I made up a plastic blanking plate to bolt over the EGR end so I could fill it with degreaser and let it sit a while.

Would a couple of pints of paraffin / red diesel, sat for a while, have worked ?

Just one more question.
I"ll do the same and Blank off the EGR end so I can leave it to soak for a week or two, so how much GUNK should I buy. Halfords sell 1 litre or 2.5 litre cans. Whilst I"m on, I"ve already ordered a used Inlet Manifild from G.O.S. Is there any thing I should check on it when it arrives. Do they have any faults, any part of it liable to be cracked or damaged or are they generally pretty bomb proof.
cheers

A gallon of red diesel or Kerosene is cheaper than gunk;)

Recieved the Inlet Manifold from G.O.S this morning and made a plastic cover for the EGR end as Whistler did, made a wooden thing to keep it level and then filled it with nearly a gallon of paraffin. Have now covered it and will leave it for at least a week.
One problem, I do not have access to a Steam cleaner or Pressure Washer. Will a hose with a jet nozzle work or do I really need to get it pressure cleaned?

The paraffin will soften all the goop. Give it an occasional swish about, to help the paraffin penetrate. A good blast from a garden hose should clear the worst of it, if the water pressure is good.
After a water blast, I slosh a bit of petrol through it to dry it out.

Thanks Nodge68.Yes the water pressure should be good enough. Should I use something like smooth edge of an old axesaw blade to scrape the sides and around the inlet holes to loosen the real caked on stuff or will the Paraffin be enough?

Ohhh - and people on the BMW forums swear by caustic soda solution (which is what oven cleaner is i believe)

Hi all,
Yesterday I fitted the 2nd hand Inlet Manifold that I"ve had soaking in Paraffin for a week and then thoroughly cleaned using a bottle brush and then power jet washed. The original I took off was not as bad as the one I bought before I cleaned it, so may well clean that one and then change it back over at sometime. Tried it this morning, must admit it seems to run better but when I booted it I still got quite a cloud of smoke. Haven"t changed the air filter yet and I will do as Nodge suggested to someone else, put in some Comma Diesel Magic.
It"s booked in for it"s MOT Monday 20th March, just hope the smoke isn"t too serious. By the way when fitting the manifold back on the car I dropped one of the 11mm nuts and one of the ERG bolts. Have ordered new today will put them on tomorrow.
