    Hi,

Well, I know I probably shouldn't have, but having fixed the brakes and having changed the turbo (mine was very oily and she lacks the power she did have(as much as a diesel has)) I couldn't resist having a fiddle with the injectors as I had a spare set of bodies. I have a pop tester and have done two lots of injector nozzles on a mercedes om636 and a small yanmar engine so it seems I had the false confidence to try it on the RR.

So took the set of injectors had been given, bought a set of nozzles (ebay) and a large can of brake and clutch cleaner.

so checked the opening pressure of the old injectors and seemed to be around 140 bar.

So one at a time took apart injectors, cleaned with brake and clutch cleaner and refitted new knozzles, torques to 80lb/ft

    Did all six injectors.

Fitted to engine but left the copper washers in place and torqued to 90lb/ft.

Ran an one body leaked so took apart and cleaned, still leaked, fitted an original injector back in.

So started nicely, tick good drives well but at tick over when hot it is running rough, have cracked off each injector pipe to see if needed more bleeding, also engine ran more roughly.

I was thinking about changing the no4 injector back in (with wire) or have I got the opening pressures wrong? Have I finally broken it?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Minimum crack pressure is 140 bar, max crack pressure 160 bar. With a maximum 10 bar deviation injector to injector.

#4 can be a PITA, especially if you catch the wire at any stage. If you have a spare then got to be worth a try. You might spot something else while doing it. MAP pipe all good?

    Thanks guys,

Have changed injector 4 again and better but still not as good as it was, pulling well though and not too smokey unless I put my foot down (all on the proviso of as much as you can in a diesel). Having trouble getting hold of some 11.4mm injector shims (the guy on the island who has helped me before has no injector shims any more). Was also wondering perhaps I should leave alone as if I shim them up to 150 bar will that be more pressure on the injector pump and therefor more likely to leak? Was wondering if it is the balanced pulley on the front ? But still a slight hunting sound so probably not..........Ummmmhhhhh?????

Wammers said 150+/-10psi so that's what it is supposed to run with.

I'd think any refurb place could get hold of spacers for you? Cannot cost much?!

Well went to two guys on Jersey who do injectors and one had no shims for sale and the other guy offered to just set the pressure for £10 to £20 each injector. However once he had them he said the nozzles I had fitted were no good and they did need rebuilding. This bit is my fault and said ok go ahead. Collected them yesterday and the bill was £750 for new nozzles, heat shields and sealing copper washers. I did say I couldn't afford that and chipped him back to £500 so now not sure whether to feel bad at not paying full bill or if £500 a bit step still. He made a comment about getting the nozzles from landrover??? If they are genuine nozzles I wondered about selling them, if someone was doing a serious rebuild and buying some secondhand, seems you can get them 'serviced' on flebay for £20 each.

Maybe fit them and if she runs superduper time to sell on.

I only wanted to do a little job to get a feeling of satisfaction to make up for how work drains the soul out of you.........

Chin up and carry on I suppose.............

He saw you coming from a long way off, Diesel Bob in Ribchester near me does exchange injectors for £35.00 each. Maybe a little more for number four.

Rip off then, with your tax rates and no VAT should be at least 15% cheaper. Why would you expect to pay more in Jersey?

Lack of competition and only small numbers of anything are shipped in.

Live and learn. I daren't touch my injectors after what happened to @clock_guy. When I think they're f*cked I'll just replace the lot! I'm amazed how well this M51 engine runs for such an old lump that's worked so long and hard though. Credit to BMW there.

Well, more discussion today and a final settlement of three hundred pounds.......

Think there are a number of old boys who view Jersey as everyone must be in finance and loaded.........

But I have fitted them in and oh my what a difference!!!!!

Made it round the block and up the hill and back.

Slight leak on last return connection and alternator fault flashed up but have had the battery charger on for a few days (modern sort so should be ok) and all the LEDs came on on the EAS control and rev counter dropped out and then intermittently ????? But am going to refurb the EAS pump and check the 0v connections.

Please, please, please can it be Ok!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the replies guys gave me the assurance that I wasn't being a complete tight ass and hence the confidence to go back and discussing the bill,

The "Alternator Fault" message usually means what it says, that plus the rev counter dropping out tells me your alternator is fecked.

    Thanks datatek,

That will be the third alternator in two years and only fitted this refurbed one a couple of months ago and not had much use. A short somewhere?

Have a spare regulator and will fit that first.

    Cheers

Could be a bad connection, have you checked the earth strap from engine to chassis?

    Thanks Guys,

Changed the alternator and fitted the new regulator as well. Been for a 7 miles drive with three stop/starts. Drove 3.5miles and all good. Stop for an hour, started and alternator fault showing, all EAS lights on and no rev counter, decided to head home and after a short while (500metres) rev counter came alive and lights went off. Stop at shop, started all ok, drove a couple of minutes and rev counter dropped down and lights on on EAS. Staid like this for a couple of minutes and then rev counter back and lights off......
Got home, unloaded some shopping and started car all good.

Tomorrow will fit a voltmeter to battery and run engine and see if voltage is changing or not and any correlation with rev count/lights coming on happening.

    Any other suggestions?

    Cheers
