Just done injector washers and seals on my 2003 defender td5 125k miles. Ran the purge procedure it started fine and left to idle for about 5mins.

All of a sudden, knocking like **** and smoking from exhaust and engine bay. I've got diesel coming from the rocker cover breather!

What have I done??

Edit- just pulled dipstick I've got diesel in the sump now. All washers and o rings fitted ok I can't believe this

@jamesmartin :(

Pulled rocker cover off it's swimming in diesel. Sure I set clearances correctly and all 5 injectors felt nice when they seated.
Only thing I can think is copper washers wouldn't stay seated on the injectors so maybe they're mis seated?

When I turn engine by hand it's all gurgling and sloshing and I can only turn it so far until it feels seized :eek::eek:

All injectors back out now. All seals and washers were in place. All injectors were seated properly as far as I can see. When I turn engine now, diesel comes flying out the bores

Symptoms before changing the seals were poor starting and cutting out on 1 occasion then starting after running purge procedure.

Shall I just drain sump, mop up diesel in cam carrier, change all filters and refit the injectors again and try again? Worried about runaway engine cuz there was a lot of diesel getting into the intake thru the breather.

Or is it head off for pressure test and compression test on bores?

Any help please lads as I've got to pick up a caravan on the 13th Oct and starting to feel like crying here

Put injectors back in and ran pump on ignition. Diesel is *****NG out of no.5.

Recent threads suggest o rings are hit and miss even genuine ones (which I've fitted)

So I've refitted one of the original rubber o rings to injector 5 and it's still lashing out.

up past the injector? have you checked injector bore, did injectors take a bit of getting out

Did you sue genuine landrover O rings? if so where were they from, should have place of manufacture on the packet.

Cheers

Yep genuine from craddocks. Mate the packets are in the bin now and the kitchen bins been emptied since but they were in clear seperate bags with land rover stickers.

I'm giving up for the day, sump plug is chewed up by p.o or his f*ckwit mechanic. Same c*nt who thought tinted windows were more important than shock absorbers

OK , no worries, I had heard that some of the O rings from certain countries were a different size. Even though they were in LR stickered bags. was discussed on here previously. Hope you get it sorted.

Landrover have been making owners into mechanics for 70 years, ... right..... but it has also made a hell of a lot more bodgers...I hope yours is only the easy stuff to fix. Good luck.

Cheers
