I have a Mark 1 1997 2.5 tdi. Intermediate starting problem, turn key starting motor solenoid click but no start. Not the starting motor as I have had a new one fitted, battery and connections good. Suggestions please.

The engine is not turning over on the starter then ?

No nothing

Does the engine turn over by hand? If it does then it’s down to the battery/ Starter motor/ solenoid or bad connection,
Also check the main earth lead from the body to the engine is good,
Was the starter a new one or second hand? If second hand I would have bench tested it before fitting,

Thanks for your suggestions, starter was brand new engine was running perfectly yesterday. I’ll check what you have suggested and see what happens. Thanks once again I may get back to you.

+1^^^^^ re earth to engine connection(s)
Could test it with a jump lead, batt earth to engine.
