I am trying to set the ignition timing on my series 3 petrol 2.25 engine, year is 1983. Haynes manual & LR repair operations manual both give two locations for timing marks. Either triple prong pointer above the crankshaft pulley or an inspection window on flywheel housing. Mine has a pointer with only one prong (see att' photo) & I cant find an inspection window. Also there does not seem to be any "V" shaped cut-out on rim of crankshaft pulley to align with marks.
Can anyone suggest how to time this engine or has anyone got a photo as to where the inspection cover is so if mine is a "earlier model" I will know where to look.

Sorry meant tippex.
Thanks for your time have now (after a struggle) found themarks on the rim, see att photo. Used the tippex to highlight them, tried my ancient strobe light but even at night I couldnt see by its faint light, so off to ebay to see if I can get a super bright LED one. The the fun of timing it begins. Rgds DW.

To be honest I did mine by trial and error. I've got a Series 3 Lightweight wit ha 2.25 5 bearing crank engine and fitted an electronic distributor. I just adjusted it by ear until I got a smooth tickover then took it f or a couple of runs to make sure it wasn't pinking and it was pulling OK.

Well done so far, sorry that the tippex didn't work, just need something bright.

Bye the bye have you considered static timing? It does work and will get you running and then able to refine?
