Idle speed from cold

hey guys my 300 tdi discovery when i start it it idles at about 750 rpm and doesnt seem to go very well unless i hold the revs on about 2000 for about 10 secs i have just bought this and i have owned cars before and usually they have a higher idle until its warm any ideas? cheers
 
Mine idles at 750 cold, hot, in-between, whatever, never been an issue for me. They don't want to be hurried when they're cold, but it only takes a few miles to warm up.
 
Yup, I agree wiv wot Paul D said about the idle speed. However, please tell us more about what you mean by "doesnt seem to go very well unless i hold the revs on about 2000 for about 10 secs ".
Do you mean you do this once and once only just after starting the engine, or do you need to set the revs to 2k and the car doesnt move off for 10 seconds, or do you mean that it seems to take some time to gain a decent roadspeed, or what exactly.
Is your clutch slipping? Is it manual or is it automatic?
Hope we can help you out her, but some Discos aren't renowned for 0 to 60 in 5 seconds! LOL
 
it is a manual and i have to only do it once i am not used to diesels so it is probably me i was just curious if the idle was different from cold like a car it is a nice truck and did not cost me alot but i have the bug for modifying it now lol
 
Sounds like a glow plug or injector might be a bit dicey, but see below ....

Classic symptom (once again it seems!) of possible leak-off pipes going brittle and cracking. Little material covered pipes between injectors, prone to going brittle, cracking and makes it hard to start, or sluggish starting ... go to a motor factors and buy a metre length for a fiver or so .. LR charge about £4 each pipe!

Only troubles I've had with mine starting from cold have been leak-off pipes and when the battery went west .. 7 year old battery just stopped taking charge ... which wasn't jelped by the alternator eating it's bearings and not charging .. new one of each fixed that .. ;)
 
Mine is idling at the same around 500 rpm and paul D has suggested checking my leak off pipes, checked em today and they are brittle as hell, going to change them as soon as i can get some replacements. hope it solves your problem and mine :)
