Hey people,

My disco 2 has been slowly leaking coolant for about 6 months and it’s getting worse. I’m pretty sure I’ve located the pipe where the leak is originating, but it doesn’t SEEM to be part of the coolant piping system (from the info I’ve garnered from google image search diagrams), although it’s leaking coolant, so it must be. I’ve never had to do any work on the coolant system in the past so am a little lost.

Anyone know what this pipe is?? It’s nearside..

Thanks in advance..

Robb

That looks very much like the pipe called the "Rail Assembly - Coolant" part number PFV100120. The rail is, I believe a steel pipe which could be leaking due either to damage or corrosion, but the problem actually looks like the joint between the rail pipe and the rubber hose connecting to it has failed.

Take a look at this page for additional information (don't be put off by the prices shown there):-

that is the main coolant pipe from the back of the water pump. if you take it off you may find a build up of crap on the metal pipe or it may be corroded or you could just replace the hose clip with a jubilee clip (if you are lucky).

Yeah it’s connected to a metal pipe, which seems ok - looks like it’s the rubber hose/jubilee clip that’s the problem!

Good to know what he part is.. I always get my bits eBay ;)

Just wanted to update this..

The leak was actually coming from the water pump. A fiddly job getting it out and replacing with a new one (£20 from ebay) but I am now watertight.

The old pump was clogged up with 17 years of gunk and the coolant was leaking from a 'bleed' hole.

What you have found is a 'weep hole' any fluid dripping from the hole is an indication that the impeller shaft seal is worn.
Unfortunately it is terminal for the pump, there doesn't seem to be anyone around these days to repair water pumps.
A bit like water pumps with grease nipples that have now gone. :(
