Ok...its not me!

but a good mate of mine.

He has around £20k to spend on a Disco, he says he has always liked the Disco 3 TDV6... but doesnt know much about them, and to be honest neither do I....

he's after some advice on what to buy and where to go

I've never bought anything that expensive, so I dont have a clue, but suppose autotrader and pistonheads? main dealer?? not ebay? fok knows... I just wish I had 20k.. lol

anyway, dont think he's going to do any towing with it, so it will just be another chelsea tractor...
he might take it down the plains now and again, but not sure on that...

cheers

Hi there, I looked at a few Disco3's before I eventually bought a 110! That wasnt a slight on the D3, it was purely because a 110 better suited my needs.

Disco 3 is an awesome car! Prices have come down in the last few years, with intro of Disco4, prices will prob take a bigger drop, then level out. Now is probably an ok time to buy.

There are different models in the range:
Commercial vehicle
Base Model - bog standard, cloth seats, solid paint
SE - bit better, metallic paint, few more toys
HSE - top of range - leather as standard
All available in 5 or 7 seats I think (i know for certain that Bas Model is availble in 5 or 7). Commercial vehicle is a 2 seater, but still has the tinted glass windows, not steel panels, like the disco 1 and 2 had

For overland etc, base model 5 seat could be better, as it has coil springs instead of air suspension, so is much more reliable. Any vehicle with 7 seat WILL have Air suspension ( due to space restrictions in boot with 7 seats)
If you need a 7 seater, buy a 7 seater - modding a 5 into a 7 at later stage will be ridiculous.

You can google the differnt kit you gt, dependent on spec, but things of use (very subjective) are
Winter pack - Heated seats and heated windscreen
Visibility Pack - Xenon lights with wash
Sat Nav - Disc based system with touch screen
Tow pack, complete with detatchable towbar (expensive to buy afterwards)

Depending on what the car will be used for, depends on the spec you will want/need. Alloy wheels are from 18" to 20" IIRC. You cant buy a set of 16" off road wheels, as they dont fit over the brake calipers, so 18" is the miniumum wheel size.

Remember that All terrain tyres or Mud tyres are very dificult to find for 19" or bigger, but 18" tyres are available (I had General Grabber AT2, G4 vehicles had some mud terrains- cant remember the name)

Go to a dealer and have a look at a few, or look on autotrader. When your looking, check the towbar for wear, you might get an idea of what the car has been used for - there are lots of "well off" families who have used an HSE to do the scgool run, and are now buying Disco4's. these are the oines to look for - lower miles, and not been battered and abused.

20K will buy a decent 7 seat SE with low miles, or possibly HSE with the Disco 4 now on the scene.

Forgot to mention! there are two engine types available - 2.7 tdv6 or 4.4v8. Tdv6 is plenty powerfu enough, and will obviously get better MPG. I had a L322 Range Rover and bought a v8, because the td6 engine was completely underpowered for the size of car.
The tdv6 is available in Manual or Auto, but I think the V8 is only Auto.

have a look at these for ideas

2005 G4 Disco in tangiers orange, V8
2005 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 4.4 V8 HSE 5dr Auto Sw

2005 tdv6 HSE
2005 LAND ROVER Discovery 2.7 Td V6 HSE

2006 tdv6 HSE Auto
2006 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 3 HSE TDV6 Automatic
