Hi guys and gals first time on have been on the introduce yourself page so will now jump in the deep end

Am now the proud owner of a 2012 110 county station wagon (no ime not rich)
driving the other day noticed it was a bit sluggish.
As I was in Barnet pulled into land rovers have been told needs new particulate filter and quoted me a lot of money I have read they can be regenerated ?

anybody know how

will get on to other niggles latter

don't you just drive it hard for a bit?
 
Depends how blocked it is ,once they are more than about 75% blocked a good hard drive wont clear them but wurth and probobly others supply a product in a can thats supposed to clear them

Take it down the road and give it some right foot first gota be worth a try ,expect plenty black reek
 
Get out on the motorway and give it a good hard sustained run. No need to rev the nuts out of it but you need to get the engine working so that the particulate filter gets good and hot. If its no better after an hour then its not going to work.

It is not fitted with a particulate filter it is fitted with a self regenerating system. Drive it at 50-70mph for a few miles and it will regenerate. If it's still a problem take it back to the dealer and get the problem fixed under the 3 year warranty.
 
Why are they quoting you anything at all? Shouldnt they cover cost? These filters just seem to be another con, cleaner emissions but you have to drive further for longer to keep it working efficiently creating more emissions.
 
Warranty stays with vehicle as long as it's been serviced along with their guidelines and by approved garages, and any fault they identify rectified as soon as reasonably practical.
 
Correction to my earlier post; it is fitted with a diesel particulate filter (wot I meant was not fitted with the disposable canister type wot costs a lot of cash). It is self regenerating, there is a warning light on the dash somewhere which illuminates amber when it needs regenerating, do the 50-70 motorway blast to regenerate it. If the warning light is red then there is a fault. I do a lot of motorway and fast A road driving so never seen the light come on. If you are not seeing any warning light your problem might be something else.

Correct. I bought mine at 11 months old, from a specialist dealer who did the first service before I collected it. Bang on 2 years old it developed a few problems, main dealer volunteered to sort it all (probably a couple of grands worth of parts and labour which of necessity included oil & filter & coolant change as well as a heap of parts). I only took it in to get a part which turned out to be a non safety related recall. They must have done well out of Land Rover on this one. All done under the warranty :D
 
Modern problem on almost all cars. AA report recently blaming dealers for selling diesels to little old ladies who would be unlikely to get into top gear on most of their journeys. Filter blocks up and the manufacturer says, "didn't you read the handbook?"
 
Does it not have the facility for the filter to be cleaned in the workshop via the diagnostic tool????

Don't have a late Defender with a particulate filter myself but my wife's Saab had one and as it rarely got used hard the filter was cleaned in the workshop at the annual service.
Plugged into the diagnostic tool and totally automatic, it ran the engine for about 20-25 minutes building the rev's up slowly and then when it was running at high rev's (and getting very hot) it intermittently injected extra fuel (which could be identified by puffs of soot coming out of the exhaust) which did the cleaning. When done, the rev's were automatically lowered (slowly) until it was idling and then the tool shut it down.
The dealer only charged a nominal sum as after the tool had been plugged in and the engine started, it was totally automatic and could be left to its own devices.

Does the Defender have a similar facility?

Seems to be not very well thought out to me. Design and fit an expensive bit of kit to reduce emissions, then pump the crap into the atmosphere during the service:confused:
 
Well gave it a belt round the 25 last night high seventies by the time I came of it was a different motor.
But now will be running it into Land Rover under warranty with list ratling under front wheel arch Low Clutch Rear wash wipe not working rev counter dies every once in a while
