I'm fed up with not being able to get spares for my obsolete petrol engine. In Italy it's not possible to switch a petrol engine with a diesel but I believe that in England you can. I'd like to know what paperwork is required. The vehicle is in Italy and has Italian plates but belongs to my daughter who has been living in the UK for 4 years. How does she go about getting English plates for it?

On a uk car you can swap engines notifie the Dvla with the new engine number and your log book will be changed here is some info on importing a car to the uk

Might pay to work out if it would be cheaper to source another here and ship out and use your current one for spares, body-wise, and flog the petrol engine as is ...

Was thinking of doing that Dippy. It's just a pity because mine is in perfect nick with no rust and excellent mechanics but it needs a new ECU and throttle housing; it's not possible to source either.

How much would your engine be worth to someone else in Italy ?

Otherwise it's just an ornament - :( unless you can track an ECU and throttle from here, but that may mean waiting a while ...

No chance of a 're-furb' of yours?

Mandy be careful about putting onto UK plates and then using in Italy, we have many problems with UK registered vehicles on the roads of Portugal
1 / vehicle can only be in the country for 6 months and then has to be out of the country for 6 months - if stopped the onus is on the owner to prove it has or risk having vehicle seized until all import duties have been paid.
2 / can be troublesome to find a UK based insurer who will cover the vehicle to be outside UK for more than 3 months
3 / has to go back to UK to have MOT done each year, though it can be done in any country that the vehicle is being driven in - but then it is noted on that countries database and it then becomes harder to prove it has been out of the country
4 / for UK MOT you would have to have UK headlamps fitted and rear fog light re-positioned
5 / with it being LHD many UK insurers will put a loading on the policy

just my thoughts

Ta bmp :)

@Dippy: haven't found anyone that would do it. They all come back with a no. My husband says he may know someone who'll do it but he's off doing Jeep things this weekend so I won't know till next week. The engine swap is just an idea. I would love a Series but I doubt I'd find one in good enough shape to drive to italy

Ship it in a container. Not as bad as you would think price wise. A friend for a quote to ship an Isuzu back to SA and it was just over £600 so I'm sure it would be cheaper for you.

After a sleepless weekend I think I have no alternative but to break it up and sell it. There are a couple of bits I won't be selling.
I'll be looking out for a Defender 300.

How much do you want for it Mandy? Serious question, pm me if you have a price in mind. Ta

OK I'll get back to you tomorrow evening. I'm going to the mechanic's tomorrow afternoon to evaluate my options. Would you want it even if we can't fix the ECU?
