OK, sold the V8 90 to a good home (just around the corner from me) and I will still get to tinker/service it in exchange for beer :D

However, I have been told of a really nice hybrid project just around the corner from me which I'm going to have a look at this weekend.

Tax Exempt RR Classic, shortened to 90". S3 front end and rear end based on a Defender 90. Well tuned V8, 4spd manual, bucket seats etc. Dash board electrics work, externals don't. Few other bits and pieces required for MOT. The price is rock bottom, the only problem is storage/working space until it gets MOT'd.

Do you think it's a good project (has been built by senior mechanic from an LR main dealer), or should I go for a rot box £500 RR classic that needs lots of welding to get throuogh it's test :eek:
 
hybrids are ok if they are cheap. and i mean cheap.
but bear in mind the reselling problem.

imho, the rotten classic is better. again it had better be cheap with a shagged out chassis.

My feelings entirely, but it could still be bargain of the century as he's got 2 other projects on the go. Will reserve judgement until I've given it the once over;)
 
Be very careful the DVLA seem to be having a purge on Hybrids and tax exempt specials. If the vehicle does not have a log book with the correct description and detail in it walk away. If it is incorrectly registered there are various things DVLA can do including seizing the vehicle and scrapping it with no recompense, on the premise that it's identity cannot be confirmed, i.e. it's built out of nicked parts from a number of vehicles. The basic problem is all the numbers on engine gearbox, axles etc etc MUST be right with the donor vehicle or you will have to get at least an SVA inspection (like a kit car)passed which could be a huge issue.
 
Chassis, Engine, gearbox, axles etc are from the original 1972 vehicle, complete with correct VIN plates. It's only the bodyshell and interior that's different.

If the chassis has been shortened to a 90" wheelbase then it will need to be SVA'd as the structural integrity of the chassis has been altered (it doesn't matter if god himself has closed up the chassis and welded it, it still needs Dept of transport approval).
Trust me, I know this from bitter previous experience under the watchful gaze of DVLA.
I hope this helps, I don't want to see anyone lose there hard earned cash.
If it was kept at the standard wheelbase there wouldn't be a problem cos it's still a standard Range Rover chassis and to all intents and purposes still a Range Rover with V5.
