How to spot a dead viscous coupling???

After having some work done on the car, T Reg TD4 it was suggested that the viscous coupling could be on the way out, as on full lock and in reverse, it feels (felt) as if the car is holding back - is this a true test?
What (apart from the cost of replacement) are the implications if I don't get it replaced :confused:
