I have a 05 plate TD4 with a service book that suggests the engine and /Turbo were replaced - supplied by owner. I have an engine number on the logbook but I cannot make out any number on the block where the Rave picky says it should be - so as the MOT history mentions changes of particulars but does not say always what they were (it's had at least 2 personal plates) I don't know if it is the original or a replacement number. How can I date the engine by observation. - any help on what to look for very welcome. My logbook says engine number 80885896 - does anyone know what age that is? it could be my original - or it could be the replacement.

Also - does anyone know if this label is the Engine number? the 8 digit number might be - it's on the back of the engine on the right hand side as viewed from leaning in the engine bay from the front of the car - you need a mirror and a torch but mine reads 82555652 - see this picture borrowed from a second hand engine seller's site.

OK - I have checked this label out on another freelander and it gave the proper engine number as per the logbook - so I am now confident that your engine number on a TD4 is on that label - also an engineer at LR confirmed that they used a barcode label to identify the engines in production.
Thanks for the jokes fellas.
If you need to know the age of your engine if it is not the original here is my input for starters - 80885896 was first registered April 2005
My current engine is 82555652 strangely my Daughter's on an 02 plate has the number 82555092 - so just the numeric value is not the whole story - perhaps the first part of the number tells of something else - anyone out there who knows?
