How much weight can my SWB pick-up safely carry in the back, considering it has crusty old leaf springs,
I nave been transporting about 250 to 350kg of sand, soil or slabs at a time but am concerned its pushing it a bit.
thanks

I think it's a case of 'how long is a bit of string?', depends on what your engine and gearbox are like, whether the chassis has seen better days, whether your tyres are cracked etc. It should be able to cope with 350kg though. I have had 750kg of ballast in the back of my 109 and its felt like it's starting to struggle a bit on hills, 1/2 a ton is much more comfortable, as for your 88 it's all a bit speculative without knowing the vehicle!

It's all an approximation but the stated recommended payload of a basic 88" is 1000lb (454kg) on road and 800lb (363kg) cross country.

Bearing in mind a healthy safety factor would have been taken away to arrive at the max payload if you're worried something important will break close to these figures then it probably isn't roadworthy
