Morning chaps! Quick question: How long realisticly should it take me to change my clutch master cylinder on my 86' 90? Bearing in mind I am a novice but practically minded? Want to know if i'd get it done one evening at work when no one's about. I realise I need an 'assistant' to bleed the system after..

Morning HBG

get yoself an "Ezibleed" or similar system - worth their weight in gold and yu got it for life. yu cab get some types that keep the master cylinder topped up as well.
Also get yoself a copy of the Rave manual - there are links on here for free downloads, but I am sure someone can post yo the relevant bits.

Hey MHM! Morning to you too! Thank you for that. Read about them thingies in my manual so will see if I can get one. Can I do it all in say 2hrs? 4hrs? Its probably best to set aside a whole day is'nt it. Incase it all goes horribley wrong.. X

It really should not take you a day. Within an hour you will have have the pedal box out and and stripped down. Carefull with the union nuts, if you round them you are then in trouble because you will then need to starting replacing pipework etc...

Put the new cylinder in, be carefull to make sure that you don't contaminate the pipe, or the cylinder when working on it.

Connect it all up and fill the cylinder, open the bleed nipple, and press the clutch fully twice, fill the cylinder again, now get under the landy and have someone push the pedal to the deck again and nip up the bleed nipple BEFORE the clutch is released. Open it again and have the clutch pressed fully again, tighten bleed nipple then have the clutch raised. Top up the fluid after about every 2. Repeat once more and that should be you.

You can put a piece of clear pipe over the nipple, drop the other end into a jar of clean fluid, and when the last few clutch depressions are made, watch the pipe for air bubbles. To be honest you will never really get any air after 2/3 top ups and 3/4 full depression of the clutch.

That means it will take all weekend, yu will need to find brake pipes on Sunday morning and there is a high likelyhood that you will drop the new cylinder into the mud:D

good luck.

Got more things to fix now too. Used the windscreen wipers today and they are noiser than the feckin mouse under the bonnet. And now the stereos got loolah on me and keeps changing the stations over all the time. usually swapping a good song for a very bad one. Boohoo!
