I'm going to buy a winch for me landy proberbly the Goodwinch Goldfish as good winch are wavering the VAT so quite a hefty discount.

For those that have winches, how have you wired them?

I will also be setting up a split charge system.. thanks!:D

Keep it simple :)

Main power leads from battery (you can use the normal engine one if it is just for the occasional "get you outta s**t" type usage)

I then use an old RR/Disco electric window switch in the cab so I can operate the winch from in there without the need for the remote/wander lead.

I also wired in a 'safety' switch like below to isolate the in cab switch to stop accidental operation.

Well.. my setup is as follows,

Twin batterys (no split charge system fitted),

Winch cable wired to starter motor,

Starter motor main positive to battery is a serious amperage length of cable. I done this in the very very unlikley event that I wish to use the starter motor while winching.

All earth cables are also serious amperage cable not the feeble wire that comes with most winch kits.

I have a 250Amp @24v marine cut off switch from my battery live to starter motor that kills everything.
(Forget FIA stamped competition kill switches and the cheaper cut off switches most are rated at 150 Amps and I burnt out one the third time I run my winch).
Same as Andy66 says my dash i have a on/off toggle switch with the emergency on off aircraft type cover providing a live to a push to make switch on/off/on switch that goes straight to the inch solonoid pack.

Its simple and effective. My winch has been abused for 6 years not used all that often but on every occasion abused and the setup has worked well. I took all the trees down from my garden rescued stricken motors from ditches and recovered mine and others form impossible terrain. All I will say is that I probably would do a split charge system if I had the money however you cant beat a piece of wire and common sense and a piece of wire doesn't go wrong or go faulty.

I'm half way through fitting one now, most important is the isolator in one of the main bat cables, needs to be easy to get at .

The winch comes off the main battery, with a simple switch operated split charge to a second one. If the main one goes flat I can jump it .

I've used 35mm welding cable, it seems to be cheaper than battery cable, crimps are a pain though .

wired my direct to the battery with some bat 4 cable through an isolator and the circuit breaker supplied just need to try her out now :D

Positive to isolator switch accessable from drivers and passengers seat and then to anderson connector. Negative straight to anderson connector. The winch then has an anderson connector on it's leads. Unless the winch is needed the enderson connector is kept unplugged.

Anderson connectors give me an isolator for when I'm outside the landy and using the winch aswell as the ability to use either winch or jump leads depending on what I want.

I have brought but not yet fitted my anderson connector but mine will connected to live positive and negative on the wich for jump starting. (i never see a need for using jump starting and winch but I have seen it done and very good it was too) will also help if i wish to do some serious winching by pairing my batteries to another running vehicles battery/s for extra oomph longevity have connector will fit after I refit the back axle' ow and change the front one. Lol
