As title. Wheel is on the **** since a new steering box was fitted, and I want to pull it off to realign. Have got the centre cap and horn button out, however I can't see how the plastic bit underneath is removed. I can see through the holes in it to the nut holding the wheel on but I can't get at it! Any ideas?

Never mind, figured it out. For anyone who's interested the back plate of the horn assembly is actually pressed into the steering wheel and sits behind a lip, but the rubbers soft enough you can work it out with a sharp knife and it pops out eventually, giving you access to the securing nut.

You wouldn't normally align the wheel by taking it off !!! That's why there adjustment on the steering link.

Set the road wheels so they are straight and then adjust the linkage between the steering arm and the near-side hub, until you achieve the steering wheel in the correct position.

I've just bought the landy so still finding out how it works! Coming from a 110 the solution is always just to tug the wheel off and put it back on straight so I assumed the same applied in this case, didn't realise there was any adjustment on the column itself.

The disco had a recon steering box and a few new steering ball joints fitted as part of it's last mot, which is why the wheel was out of alignment. It's all straight now though, drives and steers fine so I'm happy, I just made a bit more work for myself that's all :p

Still plenty more little jobs for me to sort on it as I go, all a learning experience. At least it's had the boot floor and sills all completely replaced which is a lot less for me to do :)

do you have to jack it up for that ?

It was a couple of years ago, but iirc I jacked up the chassis so that I took some but not all of the weight off the road wheels, to ensure they stayed where I put them, then worked on the steering connecting rod.

I did a bit at a time until the steering wheel was perfectly centred. It doesn't take much adjustment to make a large difference at the wheel !!!
