Good morning to all.
Its been 2 months I have my FL I am fixing it and I love the car.
Most of the work has been in the interior (previous owner left the sun roof when it was raining) and its looking perfect.

Mechanically I have changed the oil 4 times , its cleaner now , bypass egr , did the drop links track rod ends and all the filters.

So the car has done any miles yet. twice or three times a week I let it run until it reaches temp. I have been noticing when I start it sometimes ( I say sometimes because the more I run it during the week the less it does) there is some blueish smoke that clears after a few seconds even if you rev it up.

Today when I start the car its 3 degrees there was some blueish smoke that cleared. Today its very cold so the car was making loads of white smoke that vanish after a few seconds out but it was a lot. I saw most of the cars today are doing LOADS of white smoke so it should be difference of temperature. But as temp goes up he stops making that white smoke on idle but it does when you rev it, as temp goes up it does it less and less.

So far you guys might think I'm crazy but the thing is. The smoke smells like burned fuel very much. enough that my clothes smell too. Is this just because of being cold, and the car being on this life of just running some times during the week and it needs to drive? Or is just me still afraid there might be something wrong with it?

Later on I will start it again and see how it goes

Have you changed the glow plugs? They don't last more than a few years, so that's where I'd look first.
 
No not yet.
But I know its nothing to do with that but he starts really well usually at the first crank 2 or 3 seconds.
I will get them any suggestions?

Hello...im disappointed
I just started the car and no smoke on start then condensation starts and disappears. I rev the car to 2000 2500 and keep at 2000 or 2500 looks like it misfires like pop pop and LOADS of smoke LOADS white blueish.....
Don't know what happen it never did this (oil that I use is mannol SAE 5w30 API/SN CH4 ACEA A3/B3)
I don't know what to do
 
Well i started the car again no smoke on start. I was chicken I didn't rev it. but i read the car.....No codes
I cant ignore it . it started today. for some reason.
I need to find why

Search 2k misfire. It's been bouncing around for a decade. Here's an example.

There's no cure that I know. I gave up looking for it on mine.
I believe it's caused by oil contamination in the intake air, coming from the breather system.
Some cars are worse than others, but nobody has cured it yet.

Ok latest news.
I start the car no smoke. after a wile its start to smoke and stops, I go up and down the street. 1st gear 2nd gear I can ear the turbo spooling no smoke. i return stop the car there is no smoke. I rev 1800 keep it....no smoke.. rev 2000 keep it no misfire or smoke.......rev 2500 keep it no misfire or smoke.
I though it could be temperature related or some sensor .. I let is rest for 30 min. Start the car no smoke. Rev it to 2000 and keep it no smoke rev to 2500 and keep it no smoke. Go up the street 1 2 3 no smoke. Return leave it idle no smoke rev it up without keeping it no smoke.
One thing is the same the smell of rich burned fuel very strong smell...doesn't smell diesel or that would be injectors
I leave you to think honestly I don't understand specially because he never done this.
One thing that works behind my ear is with the heater, could be related to the heater the diesel one?
 
This morning..........after being running for a few minutes. After that it starts to reduce the smoke on 2000/2500 rpm.
It was cold at that time 3 so some is also condensation ....
I just cant believe that this started from one day to the other....the car used to run like a clock ....sometimes some blue smoke on start but gone in seconds ....now this. :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(.

I took the tube that goes into the intercooler there is oil (see photo). I started the car....and no smoke or at least not as much, misfire is still there its when smoke comes out...so turbo seals?
Strange thing I took one of the cover from the engine and I rev the engine oil came out of one of the screws holes!!!!! (Photo red circle)
Is this the cause for the smoke???

It's more likely from the breather circuit. ;)
Strange thing I took one of the cover from the engine and I rev the engine oil came out of one of the screws holes!!!!!
If there's a bolt in that hole, the oil is contained.
 
The breather system??!!! it was one of the first things I did was to replace it with the oil separator....that and egr bypass....could it be defective?!

This bolt holds the engine plastic cover the one with land rover written , there are so many cars without it and there is no oil coming from that bolt???!!!

No. The breather on any engine let's some oil mist out, but the BMW design is worse than most, especially the cyclone one.
This bolt holds the engine plastic cover the one with land rover written , there are so many cars without it and there is no oil coming from that bolt???!!!
Then those haven't had the wrong length bolt fitted in the past. It's common for too long a bolt to be fitted when work is done. The longer bolt pushes a thin piece of plastic out of the bottom of the hole, which then joins the the hole to the crankcase, allowing oil out.

Just put a short M6 bolt in and forget about it.

I honestly dot know what to do. if I was messing up with the engine....I just had to go back and see what i have done. Now I have just change oil install oil separator and bypass the egr.....I don think this is enough to make my engine smoke like this.....

Yes. Put the cover on with the bolt in the hole, and the oil leak will stop.;)

It's not a good design, as the turbo is always pulling air/oil mist out the breather, simply because that's closest to the turbo.

I never liked the cyclone, so never used it. I preferred the fluffy filter, which seemed to do a better job of keeping the oil out the boost system.
Now I have just change oil install oil separator and bypass the egr.....I don think this is enough to make my engine smoke like this.....

It's not the EGR, but the breather design. But now you’ve done the work, just drive it and see how it goes.
It won't do any damage, actually a bit if oil in the intake will lubricate the pistons.
